Impresa por primera vez en cuarto en Bologna por Benedetto Faelli en 1501, y en octavo por Aldo Manunzio en Venecia en febrero del año siguiente, esta que ofrecemos es una contraedición lionesa imitando el formato y la célebre tipografía de las ediciones aldinas. Según Baudrier, la edición hay que enmarcarla en la actividad de Balthazard de Gabiano y, por la composición y tipografía, la situó hacia 1506. Renouard, por su parte, sin asignarle fecha, indicó acertadamente que reproducía el texto de la edición de Faelli (incluido el prefacio) y no el texto de la de Manunzio, y que Manunzio nunca lo editó en octavo, por lo que esta que ofrecemos no se trataba de una contraedición ?página a página? Y, en fin, otros han señalado como impresor a Guillaume Huyon, pero ni este inició su trabajo para los Gabiano hasta después de la muerte de Balthazard en 1517, ni su caja y tipos responden a la peculiar estructura de las impresiones de Huyon. Tratándose, pues, de una contraedición anómala, al estar hecha a imitación de las producciones aldinas, pero tomando el contenido de la edición de Faelli, parece razonable situarla en los inicios de la actividad de Balthazar Gabiano, cuando su empeño inicial no fue tanto el de copiar las ediciones aldinas cuanto el de adoptar ese formato por sus dimensiones reducidas y buena legibilidad para sus propias ediciones de las obras que tomaba de otros impresores.
