A five volume set of works by Joseph Victor von Scheffel. This set contains; 'Der Trompeter von Sackingen' is an humorous epic poem, which was very popular upon its publication, published in 1882. 'Ekkehard' is a sentimental historical novel, set in a tenth century monastery of St Gall, published in 1882. 'Frau Aventiure' is a collection of verse, published in 1879. 'Gaudeamus' is a collection of student songs, published in 1882. 'Juniperus', published in 1878. Joseph Victor von Scheffel was a German poet and novelist. His mother was a poet, and though he originally trained in law, Scheffel eventually decided to resign and travel, painting and turning his mind to literature. He was also a librarian to Prince Furstenberg, at Donaueschingen. Scheffel was a very popular author during his life, and enjoyed a lot of praise from readers and critics. Illustrated by Anton von Werner, a popular German painter. He was known for his historical paintings of political and military events in Prussia. 'Juniperus' with nineteen in-text illustrations and eight plates. 'Der Trompeter von Säckingen' and 'Frau Aventiure' with illustrated title pages. Bookplates to the front pastedowns, belonging to a Baron William Schroder. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with gilt decoration to the front boards and to the spine. Externally, smart. Spines are a bit faded, with the odd light mark to the spines. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Mark to the rear board of 'Frau Aventiure'. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first and last few pages of each volume. Anfangs ging ich eifrig u. muthig daran u. dann erlahmte ich an der Brutalität der Karlsruher; Herr Katz ist für die Katz; er hat mir auf zwei Anfragen auch nicht mit einer Zeile geantwortet u. ich habe bis heute nicht den Muth gefunden, meine Nachfragen fortzusetzen, aber es soll im Herbst wieder geschehen. Ich lege zu meiner Entlastung den Brief Proelß' bei und mein Concept an Katz, dem ich ein genaues Verzeichnis der Geburts- und Sterbedaten der Familie Scheffel (nach Proelß Scheffels Leben u. Dichten') beilegte [.]". Bei dem erwähnten Proelß handelt es sich um den Schriftsteller Johannes Proelß (18531911), der von 1894 bis 1903 Die Gartenlaube" geleitet hatte. Anton Breitner Der aus Wien stammende Schriftsteller schrieb u. a. das Epos Der Mönch von Mattsee" (1882), die kulturgeschichtliche Skizze Diemut" (1894), gab seit 1894 die Literaturbilder Fin de siècle" heraus und beschrieb in Die Odyssee einer Kaiserin" (1895) das Leben der Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich. Breitner befaßte sich ferner mit dem Werk Joseph Victor von Scheffels, gab 1890 ein Scheffel-Gedenkbuch' und seit 1904 das Scheffel-Jahrbuch' heraus, gründete den österreichischen Zweig des Scheffel-Bunds und errichtete in Mattsee ein Scheffel-Museum, das später von dessen Geburtsstadt Karlsruhe übernommen wurde" (DBE).
