Le brillaban de travesura los ojos azules y se comportaba con el mayor desparpajo. El Antonio Turok de aquella época tenía el aspecto de un Tonyalux, "duende de piedra", especie de chaneque rocanrolero grandote y güero, disfrazado con una gabardina negra que le llegaba hasta el huesito y un sombrero viejo, de anchas alas, también negro, con el que quería ocultar su mirada de pícaro infalible. Volví a verlo meses después, escondido tras las cruces de la plaza ceremonial de Chamula, tomando fotos de un remolino de viento que arrebataba sombreros y levantaba faldas y rebozos, papeles y polvo, obligando a los tzotziles a cerrar los ojos y dejar que todo pasara tal como estaba sucediendo. Los Tonyaluxes viajan mucho, pero tienen sus querencias, y a Turok, como a mí, le gustó San Cristóbal para regresar de sus correrías fotográficas. A los diecisiete años llegó a Chiapas, donde vivió veinticinco años y comenzó su carrera fotográfica. Fue corresponsal en Nicaragua, El Salvador y Guatemala en la década de 1980. Fue el primer fotógrafo en dar cuenta del levantamiento zapatista, y más tarde, en Oaxaca, fotografió el movimiento de la APPO. Estuvo en Nueva York el 11 de septiembre de 2001 y ha tomado imágenes de los mexicanos en Estados Unidos y de la crisis industrial del Medio Oeste. Recientemente documentó las manifestaciones de protesta en la toma presidencial de Donald Trump. Ha colaborado en diferentes publicaciones como Aperture, Camera Work, Crónica, La Jornada, DoubleTake, Paris Match, Le Monde, Stern, The Independent y Proceso. Su obra está incluida en varios libros colectivos, así como en colecciones de diversos museos y colecciones privadas.
