It is illustrated with a very fine engraved title and 200 engraved figures in the text representing optical illusions, geometrical shapes, perspectives, architectural sections, Franceschi's theatre, initials, measurements of the human body. Several states of the original edition are described without priority: the first in which the date of the title and colophon is 1568, an intermediate state with the title alone dated 1569, another in which both dates are changed. This is the first work of practical perspective published in Italy. « Opera dottissima e diligentissima" (Cicognara). The three full-page woodcuts of theatre scenes come from the Serlio of 1566; others are copies of Dürer's Underweysung der messung. The last plate gives a beautiful representation of a newly invented measuring instrument by Giacomo Fusto Castriotto. "Barbaro mentions a camera obscura equipped with a ci-convex lens. He introduces a novelty: the use of a diaphragm to sharpen the image. This is the first mention of an essential device in photography [.]" (Gernsheim, Hist. of Photogr., p. 22) In his work Barbaro takes up the ideas of Pelerin, Durero, Serlio and Cataneo, simplifying them and making perspective more accessible to artists, architects, painters and sculptors. He gave the first description of the "camera oscura". "Daniele Barbaro (1514-1570) took an enthusiastic interest in perspective. This scholar from the Venetian nobility had a brilliant diplomatic career, first in the political administration - he was ambassador to England for part of this period - and then in ecclesiastical circles. Among his many activities, he commented on and supervised the publication of an edition of Vitruvius' work on architecture. In 1568, Barbaro published "La pratica della pespettiva". On the title page of the book, he states that it is beneficial reading for painters, sculptors and architects. Barbaro was well versed in the literature of perspective and covered almost every aspect of the discipline known at the time and in a way that makes his book almost encyclopaedic." (K. Andersen). Attractive copy preserved in its contemporary soft vellum. Provenance: manuscript bookplate of the painter Antoine Rivalz dated 1701, corresponding to the year of his return from Rome to Toulouse, after more than ten years in Italy. Rich in the education he had received in Toulouse, Paris and Rome, Antoine Rivalz created an original and varied style, influenced by baroque and classical art, the pictorial traditions of the 17th century and the heritage of the Italian schools.

Il testo e le tavole, corrette ed ampliate, sono dell' ediz. curata da Francesco de Franceschi e Johann Chrieger nel 1567. Solida legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida, autore e titolo manoscritti sul dorso. Tagli spruzzati rossi. Sotto l' elenco dei libri e l' indicazione del dedicatario, la famosa marca tipografica con la gatta che addenta il topo circondata dal motto "Dissimilium infida societas": la lega fra diseguali è insidiosa. Dedicatoria a Monsignor Sforza Ponzone arcivescovo di Spalato. La dedica di de' Vecchi è datata 1629 e la prefazione che compare sotto il suo nome è la stessa firmata da Francesco de' Franceschi in entrambe le edizioni del 1567 e del 1584. Con numerose tavole xilografiche nel testo di ottima dimensione, anche a doppia pagine e ripiegate. Esemplare genuino, leggermente corto in testa su poche pagine, peraltro in stato di conservazione molto buono con alcune pp. ancora in barbe. Rara ed apprezzata edizione tradotta da Daniele Barbaro dell' unica opera di architettura romana a noi pervenuta integralmente che divenne il fondamento teorico dell' architettura occidentale, dal Rinascimento fino alla fine del XIX secolo. L' opera costituisce inoltre una delle fonti principali della moderna conoscenza sui metodi costruttivi degli antichi romani, come pure della progettazione di strutture, sia grandi (acquedotti, edifici, bagni, porti) che piccole. Il patriarca e umanista veneziano Daniele Barbaro, secondo l' interesse già dimostrato da alcuni suoi illustri predecessori come Filandro e Alberto Durero, si dilunga assai sulle proporzioni, perché "ciò che ci diletta e piace, non per altro ci diletta e piace, se non perché in sé tiene proportionata misura e moderato temperamento". Nel "Sesto Libro" il commento di Barbaro si concentra tra l' altro sui palazzi e sulle connesse proposte di nuove e più moderne tipologie edilizie anche a Venezia, mentre il "Settimo" ha per tema le finiture. L' attitudine scientifica, frutto delle esperienze maturate nel periodo giovanile in cui frequentò lo Studio di Padova, trova compiuta espressione nell Ottavo e nel Nono Libro , dove Barbaro ha modo di affrontare con straordinaria ampiezza i temi prediletti dell idraulica, della geometria e dell' astronomia, dilungandosi anche sulla costruzione degli orologi solari e ad acqua. Mentre nel "Decimo Libro" ha modo di ragionare sulle macchine, belliche e no, affiancando anche in questo caso a problematiche di natura tecnica, come la progettazione di pompe idrauliche, interessi più squisitamente teorici legati agli studi di fisica. Second Venetian edition of Vitruvius's ten books De Architectura, with Latin commentary by the Italian humanist Daniele Barbaro (15141570) and printed by Francesco de Franceschi in 1567. Barbaro, a well-known Venetian patrician and patron of the arts, made editions ofVitruvius's works in Italian (Venice: Francesco Marcolini, 1556) and Latin, as here, a revised edition in smaller format. According to Barbaro, his commentary took over nine years to complete. The work is a landmark contribution to Vitruvian studies of the Renaissance; manyof his peers regarded Barbaro as an "intellectual light" of his time and his architectural treatises useful in current practice. The illustrations in this volume, including the famous Vitruvian man, were the result of a fruitful collaboration with Italian architect Andrea Palladio (15081580), begun probably in the early 1540s. Together, their development of the illustrated architectural book greatly impacted the study of classic architecture and design aesthetics in the Renaissance. This revised edition is uncommon outside of the usualinstitutions.

The large woodcut initials at the beginning of each book are from a mythological alphabet of Giolito (Fowler). The historian and scientist Daniele Barbaro (1513-1570) studied philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy at Padua. He actively served as coadjutor to Giovanni Grimani, the Patriarch of Aquileia and participated in the final sessions of the Council of Trent (1562-1563). Apart from the present work, he published commentaries on Porphyry and the Rhetoric of Aristotle. His 1569 work on perspective is regarded by many as his most original work. The second edition of Barbaro's Italian version of Vitruvius was also published by Franceschi and Criegher in 1567; some of the woodcuts in the present edition appeared in Barbaro's La pratica della perspettiva, published at Venice by the brothers Borgominieri in 1569. The military and civil engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (ca. 70-80 BCE - ca. 15 CE) is the author of the only surviving ancient treatise on architecture, arranged in ten books. By his own account, Vitruvius served in the Roman army under the command of Julius Caesar. Rediscovered by the Florentine humanist Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459) in the library of Saint Gall Abbey, and publicized by Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472), Vitruvius' De Architectura would later define the canon of classical architecture. His assertion that structures should exhibit the three qualities of stability (firmitatis), utility (utilitiatis), and beauty (venustatis) became a commonplace in architectural theory. The wide-ranging program of De Architectura deals with "principles of buildings in general, building materials, designs of theatres, temples and other public buildings, town and country houses, baths, interior decoration and wall paintings, clocks and dials, astronomy, mechanical and military engineering." (PMM). Throughout the Renaissance, Vitruvius' work provided inspiration for such important artists and architects as Michelangelo, Leon Battista Alberti, Donato Bramante, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Giacomo Vignola, Andrea Palladio and many others. The first printed edition of De Architectura appeared at Rome (ca. 1483-90); the first illustrated edition, at Venice (1511). First edition of Daniele Barbaro's (1514-1570) translation and commentary. This important publication is the fourth translation of Vitruvius into Italian and the sixth into a European vernacular. The original purpose of this edition was to make accessible to architects who did not know Latin a reliable text of a higher lexicographical quality than that of previous Italian translations. Its aim was to combine the strictly philological and archaeological study of the Vitruvian text with the drafting of a commentary which would also have the function of an architectural treatise for contemporary practice. Daniele Barbaro benefited from the close collaboration of the Vicentine architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), who not only drew the most important illustrations in books I-VI, but also contributed to the commentaries and the elucidation of certain obscurities of the text of Vitruvius. The abundant woodcut illustrations in the text include a large architectural title (triumphal arch), an elaborate allegorical frontispiece (repeated in fine) showing architects and their instruments, and a further 131 figures including 8 double-page and 15 full-page, engraved by Giuseppe Salviati. Barbaro's edition 'is widely considered to be the most significant Italian edition of the treatise, the illustrations provided by Andrea Palladio, among others, are the most persuasive architecture illustrations associated with the Vitruvian text' (Millard).
