Among their buildings are the Presbyterian church of Wales, Princes Avenue, Liverpool (1865), the Synagogue, Princes Road, Liverpool (1875) -- one of their finest buildings -- the YMCA, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool (1875-7) and the Church of Edward the Confessor, Philadelphia (see J. Quentin Hughes, Liverpool, London, 1969). The Audsleys were among the best known nineteenth-century "ornamentists" and helped to lead (with Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser), the revival in English decorative design that had begun after the Great Exhibition of 1851. They published a number of books on ornament and architecture including The Sermon on the Mount (London, 1861) -- one of the finest of contemporary "illuminated" books -- A Handbook of Christian Symbolism (London, 1865), Cottage, Lodge and Villa Architecture (Glasgow, 1868), Outlines of Ornament (London, 1881) and Polychromatic Decoration (London, 1882). George Audsley collaborated with Maurice Ashdown Audsley in The Practical Decorator and Ornamentist (Glasgow, 1892) -- one of the last major British chromolithographic books." - See Victorian Web.

The Kelv…in appears on pp 1-40 in the issue of pp 1-160. Extracted from a larger bound volume.[++] "In 1900 Lord Kelvin identified two problems for 19th century physics, two "clouds" as he puts it: the relative motion of the ether with respect to massive objects, and Maxwell-Boltzmann's theorem on the equipartition of energy. These issues were eventually solved by the theory of special relativity and by quantum mechanics."--Oliver Passon, "Kelvin's Clouds" (ResearchGate). [++] "Summary [IN the present article the substance of the lecture is reproduced with large additions, in which work commenced at the beginning of last year and continued after the lecture, during thirteen months up to the present time, is described with results confirming the conclusions and largely extending the illustrations which were given in the lecture. I desire to take this opportunity of expressing my obligations to Mr William Anderson, my secretary and assistant, for the mathematical tact and skill, the accuracy of geometrical drawing, and the unfailingly faithful perseverance in the long-continued and varied series of drawings and algebraic and arithmetical calculations, explained in the following pages. The whole of this work, involving the determination of results due to more than five thousand individual impacts, has been per-formed by Mr Anderson. K., Feb. 2, 1901.] [++] 1. The beauty and clearness of the dynamical theory, which asserts heat and light to be modes of motion, is at present obscured by two clouds. I. The first came into existence with the undulatory theory of light, and was dealt with by Fresnel and Dr. Thomas Young; it involved the question, How could the earth move through an elastic solid, such as essentially is the luminiferous ether? II. The second is the Maxwell-Boltzmann doctrine regarding the partition of energy. [++] 2. CLOUD I. RELATIVE MOTION OF ETHER AND PONDERABLE BODIES; such as movable bodies at the earth's surface, stones, metals, liquids, gases; the atmosphere surrounding the earth; the earth itself as a whole; meteorites, the moon, the sun, and other celestial bodies." P. J. E. Peebles, "Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Clouds Over the Twenty-First Century Virtual Observatory": "Physical science has changed in the century since Lord Kelvin's celebrated essay on Nineteenth Century Clouds over the Dynamical Theory of Heat and Light, but some things are the same. Analogs in what was happening in physics then and what is happening in astronomy today serve to remind us why we can be confident the Virtual Observatory of the twenty-first century will have a rich list of challenges to explore.".

This overview of their first exhibition includes photographs by leading figures including Alfred Stieglitz, James Craig Annan and Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr, and numerous others. Printers incluce L'Imprimerie Chaix, Georges Petit Gallery (supplied, of Paris), T. Fillon/LeMercier & Cie (Paris), Richard Paulussen (Vienna), James Craig Annan (Glasgow), Paul Dujardin (Paris), J. Blechinger (Austria).t69 of the photographers accepted for this first exposition were from France but the material included was highly international. There were 30 photographers from Great Britain including Scotland and the Isle of Wight; Austria had 17 followed by Belgium and Holland with ten. Nine were from America: including Emilie Clarkson, John Bullock, John Dumont, Rudolph Eickemeyer, Emma Farnsworth, Clarence Moore, William Post, Robert Redfield and Alfred Stieglitz. Works from Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and Switzerland were hung. Algeria was represented by at least one photograph by the Frenchman Emile Frechon. The work of the deceased, but influential, British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) was acknowledged by the exposition committee members and she had an unknown number of works accepted for hanging.OCLC number 889431269; Met Watsonline record number b12671320. .

Aggiungi al carrello3pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Charles R. Broughton Esqre | Foreign Office | London', and docketed by recipient on the same page 'Naples 22 June 1815 | Wm. Court | 12 July | A'. à Court has written 'Duplicate' in the top left-hand corner of the first page (he would have sent several copies of the le…tter in case one miscarried, but the fact that this is the one that was received by Broughton is evidenced by the docketing). In fair condition, on aged paper, with usual broken wafer. He has received Broughton's letter of 27 May, and itemises the substantial sums that Broughton has received for: 'One Quarter's Salary to April 1814 as Envoy to the Barbary States', 'Equipage Money for Palermo Mission' and 'By allowance to defray expenses of Special Mission'. He points out that 'my Barbary Pay ought to have ceased on the 5th. January 1814, on which day it was fixed by Mr. Hamilton & Lord Liverpool, that my Salary was to be same as that of all other Envoys to Palermo namely £5200 pr. annum.' While his salary should have been 'issued in the regular course of payment from the Treasury at this rate', he lays out financial calculations proving a shortfall of £777 15s 0d, before requesting 'that you will immediately make the necessary application to Mr. Hamilton in order to obtain a warrant for this Money, & pay the same into the hands of Messrs. Coutts', adding that 'This Sum is positively my right, & cannot be asked by me as a favor'. He continues: 'I might very well be justified in asking for some allowance for my very expensive and circuitous Journey to Palermo, & my extra-expenses there, but at present I limit myself to what is positively my due'. He suggests that the letter be submitted to Hamilton, 'who certainly will not deny the justness of my Claim'. Postscript reads: 'I cannot speak to the correctness of the account you have sent me, until I receive my Papers &c. from Palermo - the deductions appear to me to be unusually heavy'. The Oxford DNB points describes how à Court was secretary of legation at Palermo and Naples, 1801-7, and chargé d'affaires there, 1801-2 and 1803. In 1807, after Napoleon had occupied Naples, but not Sicily, he was sent as secretary to the Earl of Pembroke's special mission to Vienna. After service in Malta, in April 1813 he 'received his credentials as envoy-extraordinary to the Barbary states (Algiers, Morocco, Tripoli, and Tunis), to which he travelled in the summer and autumn of 1813. The most pressing problem was that of piracy, although he was also instructed to obtain supplies for the British army in Spain. He returned to Naples as minister-plenipotentiary in 1814'.
