Recueil de 7 ouvrages d'ésotérisme reliés en un seul volume, dont des éditions originales rares. La plupart des textes portent sur le magnétisme animal. On a ainsi : Une édition originale de Mesmer et le magnétisme animal, le best-seller d'Ernest Bersot sur Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), fondateur de la théorie du mesmérisme. (Caillet 1055). Une édition originale rare des Lettres d'un magnétiseur avec portrait de l'auteur gravé sur acier par E. Gervais en frontispice. De ce recueil de onze lettres on connaît surtout la sixième, adressée au marquis de Saint-Victor, qui traite d'expériences somnambuliques menées en présence de Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier, Paul Lacroix, Roger de Beauvoir? (Caillet 9388 ; Dorbon-Ainé 4117). Une édition originale du Nouveau manuel du magnétiseur praticien précédé d'une introduction par un magnétiseur spécialiste, du célèbre magnétiseur italien Regazzoni. Entre 1855 et 1860, Regazzoni, qui exerçait alors à Paris, attirait foule de curieux et de médecins à ses séances expérimentales de magnétisme. Les récits de l'époque suggèrent que ses prouesses étaient grandes : dans son enthousiaste préface, Delaage évoque la technique du « foudroiement » : « avec la rapidité de l'éclair et la violence de la foudre, il les renverse dans un état de catalepsie » (p. 18). Regazzoni était également capable de provoquer la « nymphomanie » et la « turgescence mammaire » (p. 19) ! Dans ce manuel pratique, Regazzoni livre les techniques de son magnétisme spectaculaire. On apprendra ainsi à provoquer chez le sujet la catalepsie, la paralysie des sens et des membres ainsi que l'insensibilité. (Dorbon-Ainé 3953 ; Caillet 9213). Une édition originale très rare de De l'influence du magnétisme sur le développement de la voix et du goût en musique. Dans ce très curieux ouvrage, Jean-Jacques Beaux raconte ses expériences de magnétisme. Leur but, de manière tout à fait originale, est de développer chez ses trois sujets une oreille musicale et une jolie voix ! Le ton de l'ouvrage fait parfois sourire : « Alors Madame F?, blessée dans son amour propre, répondit : « Ah ! Je chantais bien avant d'être magnétisée. » Elle chantait comme une? meringue. (p. 79) (Dorbon-Ainé 254 ; Caillet 891). » L'ouvrage passionnant du journaliste Henri Delaage Le monde occulte ou mystères du magnétisme et tableau du somnambulisme à Paris ; plus qu'un traité de magnétisme, on a là le portrait de la société des disciples parisiens de Mesmer. Delaage insiste sur le caractère protéiforme du magnétisme et s'intéresse à toutes ses manifestations, du magnétisme thérapeutique au magnétisme divinatoire. Si Delaage était lui-même un grand défenseur du magnétisme, son ouvrage fait la part belle à la dénonciation des charlatans. Une édition originale peu commune de Table qui danse et table qui répond, expériences à la portée de tout le monde, une brochure portant sur le phénomène des tables tournantes. Il s'agit d'un recueil de témoignages visant à prouver la réalité de la « danse des tables ». L'auteur invite les sceptiques à reproduire l'expérience en détaillant le protocole prescrit par le Dr. Andrée. (Caillet 4843 pour l'édition de 1854 ; Dorbon-Ainé 2025). Une édition originale de La sorcellerie, qui détaille l'histoire de la sorcellerie occidentale de l'antiquité au Moyen-âge, en s'attardant plus particulièrement sur les charmes (lycanthropie, « l'aiguillette »?) et outils (talismans, baguettes, peaux de hyènes, pierres précieuses?) utilisés par les sorciers. Un chapitre est consacré au Sabbat tandis qu'un autre recense plusieurs cas d'accusation de sorcellerie. (Dorbon-Ainé 2765, Caillet 6808). Provenance : « B. on de M. », mention manuscrite sur la première garde. « Monsieur de Morague », transfert du papillon de relieur, « M. de Morague à relier ½ toile anglaise ».
