Reginald Jacques was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936. From 1931 to 1960 he was conductor of The Bach Choir in London. In 1936 he founded his own Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960. In 1954 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died in 1969. John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury & Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, died 2015 ; FINE. Book.

An impressive collection of early nineteenth century poetical and devotional works, each individually paginated, and with en…graved title pages to each.The first work is the very scarce 1802 'Devotional Pieces', featuring a number of hymns and prayers,The second is the very scarce 1801 short work of poetry and prose 'Moral Philosophy - Golden Verses of Pythagoras; The Natural Daughter; &c. &c.'.The third very scarce work is 'Amatory. The Invitation. Edwyn and Eltruda', with charming poems, prayers, and anecdotes.The fourth is a posthumously published circa 1804 'Select Pieces' by Benjamin Franklin, including a selection of the American Founding Father's essays, including 'Morals of Chess' and 'A New Mode of Bathing'.The fifth volume present is an 1801 edition of the poems of John Armstrong, including a short memoir of the life of the author.The sixth work is an 1800 collection of odes from poets including George Dyer, M. Robinson, J. Ogilvie, A. L. Barbauld and others. The seventh is an 1801 edition of 'Letters from Yorick & Eliza', the collection of ten letters Laurence Sterne wrote to Eliza Draper, with whom he fell in love.The final work is an 1804 'New Edition' of E. Tomkins's 'Poems on Various Subjects', a collections selected to reflect the 'Practice of Virtue', and to demonstrate the beauty of English poetry.With ink inscriptions to the rear endpaper.A wonderful collection of poetical, moral, and devotional works from the early nineteenth century. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail and boards. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Inscriptions to rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned, with instances of spotting. Closed tears and losses to perimeters of first title page. Inscription to head of front title page.
