Janssonius printed, after the 1620 Dutch and French editions, five Dutch, two English, and three French editions, of the 'Flambeau de la Navigation' after Willem Janszoon Blaeu until 1637. His navigation manual is considered one of the great books of Dutch cartography and was one of the most widely used pilot books for the European coasts. The work covers Holland, Zeeland, Flanders, France, Portugal, Spain, the western North African coast, the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, the south coasts of Ireland and England, Friesland, the German North Sea, Jutland, Holstein, Mecklenburg, Pomerania, Prussia, the Baltic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, northern Russia, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, the Hebrides, and the east coast of Scotland and England. "Of all the Blaeu atlases, the townbooks of the Netherlands are held in the highest esteem in the Netherlands. This is partly due to the fact that their composition is linked up with the struggle for independence from Spain of the Dutch Republic in the 17th-Century. Bound up, by sentiment, with the most dramatic and heroic period of the shaping of the Dutch State it shows the proud and industrious cities of the North in their full splendour. Towards the end of the battle with Spain, Joan Blaeu planned his town books which were to contain ca. 220 maps, evenly distributed over two volumes: the towns of the Republic in Volume I, the towns belonging to Spain in Volume II. In the planning stage of the atlas, some years before 1648, while the text had been printed and also most of the plates, Joan Blaeu could not know how the Peace treaty would turn out. In the last decades of the war, several towns and fortresses in the south had been or were besieged by the army of the Republic and Blaeu had to take a decision as to inclusion of these disputed towns into the two volumes of his atlas. The very first edition of his town atlas reflects the situation during the last years of the war: 26 maps of towns and fortresses are incorporated in the "Spanish" volume, but had to be transferred to the "Republic" volume in a second edition. Five maps of the "Republic" had to be transferred to the "Spanish" side. Consequently, apart from the very rare first edition, the volumes I and II are uneven in the number of maps, the first volume being the larger. At the end of the Index of the first edition, printed in 1649 after the Treaty of Westphalia, Joan Blaeu [gives a] notice to the reader" explaining the arrangement of the maps" (Koeman I, page 295). He is known to have engraved three ex-libris (bookplates) of which the one for John Holland, as here, heraldry artist, is the most important. This is the rare first state of the plate, of which the shield was re-engraved to reduce the lion rampant's size and that of the fleur-de-lys. The second state is illustrated in the catalogue Ex-libris o el arte de identificar sus libros, Bogotá, 1988. The region is famed for its black truffles, Cahors wine and Rocamadour goat's cheese. The map shows many rivers, including the Dordoigne and the Lot. The towns of Lusetz and Montauban are shown as are many villages, abbeys, and chateaux. Physical detail includes forests, rivers, hills, and lakes. There are three cartouches; a scrolled title cartouche, a coat of arms on a tapestry design, and the scale of miles on a plinth with a female figure using a pair of dividers measuring the world, a pair of books, and a chained monkey. The map is centered on the provincial capital of Saintes on the river Charente. the map also depicts the towns of Cognac, La Rochelle, St. Jean d'Angely, Richemont, and Tonnay. Physical topography includes towns, villages, forests, marshlands, hills, and rivers. A compass rose and a pair of decorative cartouches complete this delightful map. Important place names include Senlis, Crepy, Compiegne, Meaux, and Soissons. The Rivers Oise and Marne, among others, are prominent. Other topography includes woodlands, forests, hills, lakes, towns, and villages. A pretty title cartouche is engraved in the lower left corner; it features the Valois coat-of-arms, flanked by a pair of hunters, with their spears, hunting dogs and a falcon.
