The book covers roughly the first 60 years of the modern Korean church. It highlights both the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in revival and the costly endurance of believer…s amid intense opposition.Blair, an American Presbyterian missionary who arrived in Korea in 1901, provides an eyewitness record of how the gospel first reached Korea, the growth of the church in the early years, and the great revival of 1907 centered in Pyengyang (modern Pyongyang). At a Bible conference, a deep sense of God?s presence led to widespread conviction of sin, public confession, intense prayer, weeping, and spiritual renewal. The revival spread across the Korean peninsula and is often called the ?Korean Pentecost.?Hunt, Blair?s son-in-law (born in Pyengyang) and a long-term missionary, continues the story. He recounts the ?baptism of suffering? that followed the revival: Persecution under Japanese colonial rule (1910?1945), including pressure to participate in Shinto shrine worship and related trials; brutal oppression under Communism, especially in the North after 1945 and during the Korean War, with many believers imprisoned, tortured, or martyred; and personal accounts of Korean Christians who remained faithful unto death, many of whom Hunt knew personally.ABOUT THIS COPY: Softcover.
