At the time, he had been specifically requested to eliminate all personal names and references in the incidents with Davies, whom Gouldsbury would specifically mention in the follow-up "Tiger Slayer by Order" (1915). Gouldsbury writes of numerous encounters with tigers in his own adventures, hunting from elephant back and machans, as well as leopards, and maruading elephants, with additional references to bison, ibex, and others. Davies relates his time serving during the Sepoy Mutiny, work as a sporting inspector, and specifically hunting down tigers, elephants, and others endangering villagers, and livestock. One chapter specifically mentions hunting a 419 lb. tiger stretching over 10 feet, 7 inches from nose to end of tail, and standing 3 1/2 feet which had terrorized villagers killing cattle across Bengal. Five original and scarce stereoview photographs of the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition & Oriental Fair, which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration over the Louisiana Purchase. These stereoviews illustrate the Sunken Gardens, the U.S. Government Building, the Agricultural and Foreign Palaces, interiors, and the iconic Forestry Building. Benjamin Kilburn (1827-1909). and his brother Edward (b. 1830) initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870's, and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains, and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs, purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Rau, the Kiser Bros., and others. Wasson (fl. 1899-1939) originally founded the International Stereograph Co. in 1899 in Decator, IL, and produced a wide range of images, often in the West, maintaining studios in Idaho, Arizona, and Oregon as well.…

Of particular interest is the scarce 1860 map by J.H. Colton, lacking in most copies, which includes the inset Continental Profiles, as well as denoting the Dakota Territory as one, Indian Territory tied into Arkansas, along with the newly created Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona & New Mexico territories. George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901), and brother Charles B. Colton (1832-1916) had reconstituted their father's firm following the Civil War, and riding the railroad building boom were active in continuing to update and issue pocket maps for eager travelers. Mixed in with the familiar Arts & Crafts material which filled the early expositions, including industrially produced glassware, metalwork, ceramics, and more, the 1853-54 Exposition served as a vital presentation of American invention and technology, including Royal Earl House's innovative printing telegraph with its piano-style keyboard, a Henry Fitz refractor telescope, John Whipple's daguerreotypes shot of the Moon at Harvard College, and even a publicity stunt featuring Elias Otis demonstrating his safety elevator by dramatically cutting the rope holding the cage preventing is descent when they deployed. The 1853-54 Exhibition was also vital to the development of iron construction in America, including the striking octagonally planned domed structure by Castensen and Gildermeister, as well as plans submitted by Paxton, Downing & Vaux, Bogardus, and Hoppin, all illustrated here. After the fair closed in November, 1854, the New York Crystal Palace sporadically held tradefairs until 1858 when the iron and glass building burned to the ground in less than 30 minutes. First edition of this excellent early account of hunting on the Kenai Peninsula, including descriptions of Alaskan Native Americans, salmon cannery operations, and more. Radclyffe had acquired a permit from the Bureau of Biological Survey with the USDA in order to collect big game specimens for the British Museum, and the account was dedicated to a longtime fellow hunter and friend, Theodore Roosevelt. The author details his experiences with hunting Alaskan Brown Bears, Grizzly Bears, Moose, Dall Sheep, and running afoul of the zealous US Deputy Marshal Sexton, a stickler for the new game regulations instituted on the Kenai in 1903 (not to mention destroying the distilling operation of Alaskan hunter & miner Andrew Berg). He managed to survive a charging bear sow after being abandoned by his guide as well as the Alaskan courtroom, but his companions were not so lucky as the judge ruled that the permit did not extend to the hunting party. Radclyffe returned later to hunt Alaska on the Kenai in August, 1910 employing Andrew Berg as his head guide. Hand-colored aquatint pictorial title-page by Henry Alken, sixteen magnificent hand-colored aquatints by C. B. Newhouse, and eight pages of publisher's advertisements. Each plate printed on fine artboard and captioned with Newhouse's name and the Fores imprint. Recently bound in an elegant period style in full dark green morocco, covers ruled in gilt with decorative corner-pieces surrounding a central blind-stamped panel, spine richly gilt in compartments, decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. A handsome copy. An apparently unique copy, accompanied by Henry Alken's original signed pencil and watercolor drawing for the celebrated pictorial title-page, together with the original etched proof, hand-colored by Alken himself and inscribed on the verso: "To go with the original drawing / The Etched outline coloured by Alken Senr." Few opportunities exist to follow so completely the creative process of a major sporting artist. Here, the evolution of the title-page can be traced from Alken's original watercolor design, through the etched proof personally colored by the artist, to the finished published aquatint that introduces the book. Together they form a unique record of nineteenth-century sporting book illustration in its successive stages of conception, engraving, and publication. Originally published in 1836 under the title Incidents in Travelling, the work was reissued by the celebrated sporting print publishers Messrs. Fores in 1845 as The Roadsters' Album, distinguished by the addition of Alken's exuberant pictorial title-page. Charles B. Newhouse devoted almost his entire artistic career to coaching scenes, road travel, and sporting subjects, and nowhere is his talent more fully displayed than in this delightful series of sixteen aquatints depicting the hazards, mishaps, humor, and excitement of travel on the great coaching roads of England. The plates capture every aspect of coaching life: overturned vehicles, broken drags, forgotten passengers, overloaded mails, dangerous river crossings, snowstorms, sleepy gatekeepers, Gretna Green elopements, and desperate races against competing coaches. Each composition combines lively observation with remarkable technical assurance, preserving in vivid contemporary color the final flowering of the coaching age just before the railway transformed travel forever. Messrs. Fores occupied a pre-eminent position among nineteenth-century sporting publishers, specializing in the finest coaching, racing, hunting, and equestrian prints of the period. The addition of Henry Alken's elaborate title-page was entirely appropriate, for no artist was more closely associated with the golden age of British sporting illustration. Richly populated with coaches, horses, coachmen, guards, and travelers, the title-page serves as a visual overture to the entire work and ranks among the most attractive pictorial titles produced for any English sporting book. The accompanying original drawing elevates the present copy into an altogether different category. Original designs by Henry Alken prepared for published books are exceptionally uncommon; the survival of the corresponding etched proof, personally colored by the artist and explicitly identified as such, appears to be without parallel. Together they provide a rare insight into Alken's working methods and transform the volume into a unique archive of the artist's creative process. No other copy has been recorded containing Alken's original artwork and working proof, making the present example not merely the finest copy of the book known, but one of the most important survivals relating to Henry Alken's p.
