Interviews with people about being born -- Über 20 Personen: Kinder, Jugendliche, Erwachsene, Freunde und Kollegen, weiblich wie männlich, hat Ingrid Calame in ihrem Band »Being Born« über ihr Wissen zur eigenen Geburt befragt. Begleitet werden diese selbstredend ungemein persönlichen Gespräche durch Bildausschnitte von Frottagen mit Pigment auf Mylar, die die Künstlerin 2014 in einer Zisterne des Savannah College of Art and Design im französischen Lacoste und 2015 auf der Zeche Zollverein in Essen angefertigt hat. Die schemen- und schattenhaft wirkenden farbigen Arbeiten lenken den Blick gleichsam von innen nach außen. Wie von Sonnenlicht durchflutet, scheinen neben undefinierbaren Spuren und Unebenheiten in den einen Bildern in den anderen Zahnräder, Spurrillen oder Metallrippen auf. Nicht anders treten den Lesern auch die Erzählungen gegenüber, einerseits die Geschichten beängstigender Sturzgeburten, andererseits Legenden mit fast mythischem Gehalt. Das hört sich so berührend wie auch beängstigend an und wird dann aber doch immer wieder durch den Humor, der die meisten der familiären Erzählungen durchzieht, gebrochen. Der Band ist derzeit die einzige lieferbare Einzelpublikation zum Werk der abstrakten amerikanischen Malerin, die 1965 in New York geboren wurde und heute in Los Angeles lebt. 2014 war sie im Sammelband »Painting Today« von Tony Godfrey vertreten; sie ist für ihren radikalen, an menschlichen Hinterlassenschaften, an Flecken und Graffiti orientierten Stil, eine Art Kartografie menschlicher Spuren, bekannt geworden.
