Cahn im Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Genève (1997) "La poterie que les archéologues appellent «italiote» a été produite dans les colonies grecques d'Italie méridionale et de Sicile (Grande Grèce) durant la période qui s'étend de 440/430 à 275 avant J.-C. La plus grande masse de cette production est faite dans la technique dite «à figures rouges». C'est-à-dire que le décor, délimité par une ligne de contour, se trouve dans la couleur naturelle de l'argile (souvent rehaussée par un jus rouge ou miltos) et se détache sur la glaçure noire appliquée alentour. Le détail des figures est souvent peint et incisé, parfois entièrement rendu par du blanc ou du jaune, spécialement lorsqu'il s'agit de suggérer du marbre ou du bronze (c'est le cas des vases à usage exclusivement funéraire, portant l'image d'un petit édifice, sorte de chapelle abritant des personnages), dont le défunt. Cette technique «à figures rouges» prédomine aussi, tout naturellement, dans la collection Herbert A. Cahn. Mais celle-ci atteste aussi l'existence d'une autre technique, dite «de Gnathia». Les vases décorés selon elle sont normalement recouverts entièrement de glaçure noire et décorés à la peinture superposée, avec, quelquefois, un renfort d'incisions. Le style «de Gnathia» n'est, au début, qu'une production en marge de celle «à figures rouges». Puis il se développe, jusqu'à former une catégorie indépendante. Graduellement, les sujets narratifs disparaissent, au profit de motifs floraux ou abstraits, au milieu desquels subsistent quelques éléments figuratifs. Caractéristique du Gnathia tardif est aussi l'introduction des rubans plastiques, qui décorent souvent la partie basse du vase. La technique de Gnathia, qui commence au second quart du IVe siècle avant J.-C., disparaît autour de 275, survivant de quelque 25 ans à l'extinction de celle «à figures rouges». Suite aux recherches intensives menées surtout depuis 1930, et spécialement après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, il est désormais possible de faire la distinction entre les cinq écoles de la peinture italiote, mais aussi d'identifier à l'intérieur de celles-ci des groupes, même des artistes particuliers. Les écoles sont nommées lucanienne, apulienne, campanienne, paestane et siciliote, selon l'aire géographique où elles ont fleuri. Les plus importantes sont les deux premières, non seulement par la haute qualité du dessin, mais aussi par l'intérêt des sujets traités. De ce point de vue, l'importance de la peinture vasculaire italiote, spécialement l'apulienne, devient évidente, si l'on feuillette les volumes du Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae, publiés ces dernières années ."
