Nel 1923 Luigi Campolonghi, che risiedeva a Parigi da tredici anni come corrispondente del «Secolo», il quotidiano democratico di Milano, tornò per l'ultima volta in Italia per dare le dimissioni dal giornale che era caduto sotto il controllo dei fascisti. Lasciato il vecchio lavoro, Campolonghi, trasformatosi in agricoltore, affittò una proprietà a Nérac in Guascogna, e qui scrisse il suo libro di memorie. Il libro, nato dalla nostalgia dell'esule, è un'esatta fotografia («ritratto in piedi» come dice argutamente il sottotitolo) della cittadina di Pontremoli negli ultimi due secoli dell'Ottocento. Ritorno' in Francia in seguito in qualita' di corrispondente di "Il Messaggero".ÂNel 1923 torno' in Italia per dare le dimissioni dal "Secolo" caduto sotto l'influenza fascista, poi si ritiro' a Guascogna dove prese in affitto una fattoria che fu meta di molti fuoriusciti italiani:ÂAmendola, Natoli, Trentin, Torrigiani.
