Hardcover with Pictorial Board. Condizione: Very Good. Catlin, Geo. (illustratore). First Edition/2nd State. Volume I and Volume II were self-published by the author in 1841. These are not the first issue as the error on p. 124 "Frederick for Zedekiah" is not present but it is one of the first three publications definitely from the 1841 self-published editions, due to the fact the illustrations are all black & white rather than coloured, as in later issues. Also, there is a statement of " four-hundred" illustrations on the title-page which was not completely accurate and in subsequent printings was changed to "several hundred". Both volumes have red cloth boards with gilt lettering and an embossed gilt illustration of a rider-less horse along with a horse with a rider carrying a spear. The title-page reads "Published By The Author, at The Egyptian Hall Picadilly 1841". Both books have edge wear on the superior and inferior spine edges with bumping of the corners. The front and back paste downs are marbled as are the ffep and rfep. There is a previous owners bookplate attached to the front paste-down of both volumes. The page block in both volumes is tight with only age-toning. The gilt lettering is quite bright and sharp. There is moderate slant to Vol. I. The total postage of $25.00 is for media, insured, domestic shipping due to the fact there are two volumes and are heavier than usual.

Wear at cover edges, near Very Good. {Howes C-241; Wagner-Camp 84.5; Sabin 11536} "Catlin illustrated his book with line-cut reductions of his original paintings, and in the text described his adventurous years among the Indians. He recorded his observations of ceremonies, dances, hunting methods, forms of warfare, and the ways of daily living among the major tribes of the high plains and the Rocky Mountains" -- Wagner / Camp / Becker, 84. William Clark -- he of Lewis & Clark fame--testified that "I have seen Mr. Catlin's Collection of Portraits of Indians, east of the Rocky Mountains, many of which were familiar to me, and painted in my presence: as far as they have included Indians of my acquaintance, the likenesses are easily recognized, bearing the most striking resemblance to the originals, as well as faithful representations of their costumes."
