In the accounts of disaster of the early modern period, it seemed as though the heroes were missing, replaced by the anthropomorphic rage of the natural elements. Nevertheless, it did sometimes happen that singular figures emerged from the blurry mass of the people and their dramatic anecdotes, and sprang into action to address the emergency. Sometimes they were saints, sometimes local institutions: the former were invoked to mediate with heaven to placate divine anger through miracles, and the latter to manage the catastrophe and provide aid and relief. The chapters in this volume reflect on this composite phenomenon of salvific actions, especially when they assumed the character of heroic gestures suspended between reality and fiction, human and divine, ordinary and extraordinary. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume deals with natural disasters in late medieval and early modern central and southern Italy. Contributions look at a range of catastrophic events such as eruptions of Mount Vesuvius, floods, earthquakes, and outbreaks of plague and epidemics. A major aim of this volume is to investigate the relationship between catastrophic events and different communication strategies that embraced politics, religion, propaganda, dissent, scholarship as well as collective responses from the lower segments of society. The contributors to this volume share a multidisciplinary approach to the study of natural disasters which draws on disciplines such as cultural and social history, anthropology, literary theory, and linguistics. Together with analyzing the prolific production of propagandistic material and literary sources issued in periods of acute crisis, the documentation on disasters studied in this volume also includes laws and emergency regulations, petitions and pleas to the authorities, scientific and medical treatises, manuscript and printed newsletters as well as diplomatic dispatches and correspondence. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover, 22 cm. Condizione: Sehr gut. 476 pp., 15 fig. col. A very good copy. - Summary: In times of emergency, communication plays a crucial yet problematic role. While this may seem obvious nowadays, even before the emergence of modern media, the methods of gathering, elaborating and transmitting information had a significant influence on the perception of risk and decision-making processes. The book examines how government bodies and different social actors handled emergencies in the Hispanic Monarchy, from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. It features case studies from the Hispanic Monarchys European, American and Asian territories, exploring the narrative strategies used in news-sheets and gazettes, the impact of disasters on information networks, how they interacted with political and social dynamics, and the effect of conflicting interpretations of extreme events. - Acknowledgement: The papers collected in this volume stem from a range of seminars and workshops held in 20182021 as part of the DisComPoSE research project (Disasters, Communication and Politics in Southwestern Europe. The Making of Emergency Response Policies in the Early Modern Age). Many were presented at the Comunicazione, politica e gestione dellemergenza nella Monarchia ispanica, secoli XVIXVIII conference held online on 78 June 2021. Our gratitude goes to all of the members of the DisComPoSE research group and the many colleagues who contributed in various ways on several different occasions as this volume was being prepared, and in particular to Giancarlo Alfano, Beatriz Álvarez García, Antonio Álvarez-Ossorio Alvariño, Yasmina R. Ben Yessef Garfia, Davide Boerio, Diego Carnevale, Massimo Cattaneo, Vittorio Celotto, Chiara De Caprio, Giulia Delogu, Patrizia Delpiano, Filippo de Vivo, Valeria Enea, Carmen Espejo-Cala, Valentina Favarò, Idamaria Fusco, Adrián García Torres, Manuel Herrero Sánchez, Paulina Machuca, Giuseppe Marcocci, Ida Mauro, Francesco Montuori, Giovanni Muto, Elisa Novi Chavarria, Pasquale Palmieri, Rosa Anna Paradiso, María Eugenia Petit-Breuilh Sepúlveda, Massimo Rospocher, Gennaro Schiano, Umberto Signori, Gennaro Varriale, Piero Ventura and Milena Viceconte. Aggiungi al carrelloBrossura. Condizione: new. A cura di G. Bruno e Gentilcore D.Roma, 2024; br., pp. 216, ill., cm 17x24.(I Libri di Viella. 497).

Libro.
