About the Book:-While preparing the text of this discourse the author reveals that numerous and highly respectable class of readers who thirst for knowledge; and the many whose friends and relatives may have visited India, or may now be resident there, find this rare and valuable work unworthy their attention. To them it will, he hopes, at least, prove entertaining; while its value may be much enhanced with a large portion of those who may be about to proceed to the East. The desire to become useful, as well as amusing, has occasioned him to throw much general information, which could not with strict propriety have been brought under any particular head, without deviating from the intended limits of the publication, nor could such have been effected without many repetitions, which, though they might swell the volume greatly, would by no means have added either to the information or pleasure of the reader. A fair examination of the whole subject, would teach us to admire their general character; and to view them, individually, as being by no means unworthy of imitation. With regard to education, morality, and liberal principles, the gentlemen of the honourable East India Company's Civil and Military Establishments are second to none. The most interesting aspect is that a pictorial and narrative account of life in India for the European with 20 hand-coloured plates.A light and humorous book, this work gives a glimpse of the various manners of the British in India in the early 19th century. This work is a reprint of the 1813 edition. About the Author:-Sir Charles D'Oyly, 7th Baronet (17811845), was a British public official and painter from Dhaka. He was a member of the Bengal Civil Service based in Calcutta, Dhaka and Patna from 1797 to 1838. He was also a talented and prolific amateur artist who published many books featuring engravings and lithographs featuring Indian subject matter.D'Oyly was appointed as the Collector of Dacca (now Dhaka) in 1808. In the following years, he held posts as Collector of Dhaka from 1808 to 1817; City Collector of Customs in Calcutta (1818); the Opium Agent of Bihar and the Commercial Resident of Patna (1821-1831) and lastly the Senior Member of the Board of Customs, Salt, Opium and of the Marine (1833). Between 1832 and 1833, he took leave at the Cape of Good Hope, returning to Calcutta to fill the post of Senior Member of Customs, before retiring in 1838. 20 hand coloured aquatint plates, 149pp + [x] Index (including the Half Title and List of Plates); contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered in compartments, marbled edges, 28.2 x 22 cms, the first plate a trifle spotted with a small chip from the bottom margin, slight age-toning and minor spotting, in very good condition. Scarce suite of finely hand coloured aquatints depicting domestic colonial life in British India: the Europeans at their leisure attended by Indian servants. Doyley's compositions are often quietly satirical: Plate IV "A Gentleman Dressing, Attended by His Head-Bearer and Other Servants" shows a young man in his gown relaxed, seated and reading while an Indian servant washes his feet, another in the background pours his drink and yet another makes his bed, all overseen by the "Head-Bearer". The artist Charles Doyley was illustrating and observing a world in which was an intimate participant, he had been born in India into a family that had long served in India, himself serving as a member of the Bengal Civil Service from 1797 to 1838.
