Skåne and Blekinge. Volume 210 of Swedish Churches, published by the National Board of Antiquities and the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. [.] The typical Swedish "sermon church", with its plastered and white-washed walls, its tower with a rower-head or a lantern, its big windows, and its large and well-lit interior covered by a barrel-vault, was developed during the 1750's. The dominance of this neo-classical church was during the years from around 1760 until around 1860. Some 800 churches were built during this period. Although these churches are nearly as mucht a part of the Swedish cultural landscape as the little red cottage is, they have not been fully studied, and, above all, have perhaps been regarded with some contempt. The need for greatly increased knowledge about these churches is acute, particularly for people working in the field of the care and preservation of cultural monuments since they are confronted almost daily by questions concerning the renovation and alteration of these churches and their furnishings. The provinces of Skåne and Blekinge are presented in this the first volume of a planned series of seven volumes covering the whole of Sweden. In Skåne a large number of churches are strongly influenced by the work of architect C G Brunius and his devotion to the building tradition of the Middle Ages.
