Introduction in English, letters in French. xxii, [2], 97, [1] pp. Publisher's blue cloth spine over paper-covered boards with Julie's seal depicting a cat to front board and title page. Uncut. Binding very firm, boards slightly toned and spine slightly dulled. A bright and clean copy internally. In 1780, Horace Walpole inherited the manuscripts of Madame du Deffand and her letters recording her association with Julie de Lespinasse. Ten of these letters were printed by Madame du Berry, Horace Walpole's literary executrix, but the others most likely left unread until they were bought by W. S. Lewis in 1933, along with Madame du Deffand's other papers. 31 letters are printed in this volume in their original French. Bookplate of R. W. Chapman to front endpapers.
