Mazhar Yusuf. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Sinda, die Perser Abisind. (wiki) // The story of the compilation of the Gazetteer printed in 1907 and commonly known as Aitkin's makes an interesting reading and it will be worth-while to narrate it in its proper perspective. The compilation work on this Gazetteer, as we know from the Preface of the Gazetteer itself, was already in an advanced stage when Aitkin came to be associated with the job. Unlike the oriental trait where every one would always try to show that he alone is responsible for a job well done and therefore to him and him alone should go all the honours, Aitkin, a true Englishman, pays much deserved tribute to one B.A. Brendon, the original compiler of this Gazetteer. Aitkin affirms in his Preface that 'while he (Aitkin) is primarily responsible for the Gazetteer in its present form in which it has finally appeared, Brendon, his predecessor, must be given due credit for all his labours in collecting and arranging the mass of detailed information as also for writing down a portion of the material, which indeed has been recast and rewritten'. Again, at another place in the same Preface Aitkin admits that Brendon had collected and digested all the material and he (Aitkin) had only compiled the material already collected. In fact, the need for a new Gazetteer had been increasingly felt for quite some time. The second edition of the Gazetteer compiled by A.W. Hughes had already appeared in 1878 and by then had become out of date. Sir Evan James who headed the Provincial Administration for nine long years from 1891 to 1900, is said to have toyed with the idea of another Gazetteer of Sind. During his tenure some preparations had been made and some useful information, especially of archaeological nature had been already collected. By the time Brendon was appointed on 15 th Nov. 1904 to take charge of the compilation of the Gazetteer much useful information was already available. This related to the history and archaeology of Sind, the topography of the land, the alluvial character of the soil, the vagaries of the river Indus and the races that inhabited the land of Sind, the customs and manners of the people etc. During the period between 1893 and 1902 a number of very useful books had been published and the mine of information contained in these books must have come handy to Brendon and his associates.
