First edition. Large folio (41 x 54cm). Lacking boards, but with remnants of calf spine, originally issued in plain paper wrappers (here with the upper wrapper present). Engraved title page followed by 31 plates of drawings by Vincenzo Camuccini, engraved by Giovanni Folo, after the original painting by Raphael. Printed on laid…paper. WITH: Fifteen accomplished contemporary pen and ink drawings after the engravings (twelve in black ink, three in brown ink and wash), three of which are annotated in manuscript by a contemporary English hand. The majority measuring 38 x 55cm. Several sheets watermarked "Turkey Mills J. Whatman 1818". The book itself with its subsequent binding lacking, with the front wrapper detached and chipped at the edges, and with the last three plates coming loose. The contents with scattered foxing (a little heavier to a couple of plates), mostly confined to the margins, and with the odd minor mark. The additional drawings with some small tears and creases to the edges (one with heavier creasing and a 10cm tear, touching the image) and the odd small mark are otherwise in good order. An uncommon book of engravings by the Italian Neoclassical engraver Giovanni Folo (1764-1836) after drawings by Vincenzo Camuccini (1771-1844) - considered to be the premier academic painter of his time in Rome - forming studies of the expressions of the figures in Raphael's painting the 'Transfiguration' (1518-20). A pleasing example accompanied by fifteen drawings by an accomplished contemporary English artist. LibraryHub records three institutional copies in the UK (Trinity, Cambridge; V&A; Wellcome).

senza rilegatura. Condizione: in ottime condizioni. Acquaforte e bulino misure: mm lastra 392 x 440; foglio mm 470 x 525 Pittore e incisore. Formatosi a Venezia sotto Giulio Golini, acquisisce precocemente la tecnica veneta caratterizzata da un sapiente dosaggio tra acquaforte e bulino finalizzato ad ottenere la resa materica de…l segno propria del linguaggio grafico neoclassico. Collabora probabilmente con la feconda azienda dei Remondini di Bassano per poi trasferirsi a Roma presso il conterraneo Giovanni Volpato. In questa bottega prosegue l'attività di traduzione da dipinti classici e sculture raffinando sempre più il suo linguaggio. Entro la fine del secolo raggiunge una tale abilità e fama che, ormai indipendente, detiene il quasi monopolio della stampa di traduzione. Nel 1812 viene nominato accademico di San Luca grazie all'appoggio dello scultore Antonio Canova per il quale ha inciso Ercole e Lica. Alla sua morte i rami vengono acquistati dal Papa e sono oggi conservati presso la Calcografia di Stato. L'autore inserisce i soggetti in un ovale modanato a simulare due bassorilievi. I soggetti sono tratti da un'invenzione e un disegno del pittore barocco-neoclassico Stefano Tofanelli (Lucca 1750 - Roma 1812). Tofanelli con il collega Nocchi è attivo fin dagli anni Novanta del Settecento nella bottega di Volpato come fornitore esclusivo dei disegni da tradurre in incisione. In un foglio viene raffigurato un amorino coperto da un lembo di tessuto riccamente panneggiato, seduto su di una roccia nell'atto di pungersi il dito con una freccia, rivolge lo sguardo, enigmatico, allo spettatore. L'attenzione per gli effetti luministici rende il primo piano quasi argenteo mentre lo sfondo, connotato da alberi rigogliosi, è più scuro. Nel secondo foglio l'amorino è seduto, sempre coperto da uno svolazzante tessuto, colto di profilo mentre tende l'arco per scoccare la freccia. Sotto il soggetto raffigurante l'amorino che si punge il dito, tre versi di Seneca e più sotto dedica "al Genio e all'Eleganza dell'Illma. Sig.a Emerenziana Fratini Lentini". Nel soggetto raffigurante un amorino che tende l'arco, quattro versi tratti dal Libro II Egloga I di Properzio, più sotto dedica "Alle Grazie, ed al Gusto elgante dell'Illma Sig.ra Leonilda Bottoni". La marchesa Leonilde Bottoni (Padova 1812 - Modena 1895) sposò il prof. di scienze naturali presso l'Università di Modena Pietro Doderlein. In entrambi i fogli Giovanni Folo viene indicato come incisore e venditore dei fogli a Roma. Splendide impressioni su carta vergellata coeva priva di filigrana. Minime tracce di foxing visibili solo al verso. I fogli sono da datare ai primi anni dell'800. Bibliografia: R. Campanile, G.
