Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "How do today's artists understand and depict notions of love? As witnessed in this compelling book, they often transcend traditional European romantic notions to create representations of love in less familiar manifestations. The title of this volume, The Progress of Love, refers to a group of 18th-century paintings by Jean-Honor Fragonard, who represented love as a contemporary phenomenon rather than in the guise of allegory or fiction. Today's artists go further. Exploring the forces that shape our conceptions of love, The Progress of Love brings together the work of 30 artists from Africa, Europe, the African diaspora, and the New World. Beautiful color images show works in a range of media by a dazzling array of contemporary artists, including Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Sophie Calle, Mary Ellen Carroll, Kendell Geers, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Romuald Hazoum , Zanele Muholi, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, and Yinka Shonibare." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: The progress of love, by Kristina Van Dyke; Reflections on love in Africa, by Elias K. Yet, pre-colonial India was a deeply multilingual society with multiple traditions of knowledge and literary production. Historically the divisions between Hindi and Urdu were not as sharp as we imagine them today. The essays in this volume reassess the definition and identity of language in the light of this. Its aim is to move away from the received historical narratives of Hindi and Urdu, and look afresh at the textual material available in order to attempt a more complex picture of the north Indian literary culture that is more attuned to the nuances of register, accent, language choice, genre and audiences. Various factors that would lead one to consider a broader range of texts and tastes that lay before poets and writers in those times are examined. For instance, why did a Sant write in Nagari Rekhta? Why did a Persian poet or an Avadhi Sufi mix Hindavi and Persian? Whatever their motivations, all these cases speak of an awareness of multiple literary models. It also implies a keenness towards experimenting with other literary or oral traditions that go against the purist intentions of modern literary historians. This volume thus looks at the rearticulation of language and its identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and will be useful for students of modern Indian history, language studies and cultural studies.

With its traditional core tasks of collection and conservation, this historic category stands in contrast to the term "contemporary." This volume takes a variety of complementary perspectives on today's museology as it reflects upon the paradoxes underlying the very concept of the museum of contemporary art. Composed of three chapters"Now," "Tomorrow," and "Flux"and gathering together original essays, extensive conversations, as well as canonical texts, this anthology addresses questions regarding the roles and tasks of the contemporary art museum. It discusses its double character as a site of both production and conservation, and emphasizes its relation to different public spheres. It also explores ways of dealing with the standards, norms, and regulations that emerge from the practices of collecting, organizing, and educating.

American illustrator and author Esther Francesca "Fanny" Alexander (1837-1917) became a confidant of John Ruskin while she was living in Florence in 1882. The fact that he edited this book so quickly after their first introduction, speaks of his high regard for her abilities. He shortly thereafter purchased the 122 drawings that she had prepared for Roadside Songs of Tuscany. Z : 140 Seiten/pages, 70 Farbabbildungen/illustrations in color / 2 posters / vinyl record. - Situated at the interaction of art, architecture, music, mathematics, cosmology and science, Matthew Ritchie s The Morning Line is a 33-foot high sound pavilion, constructed in aluminum and conceived in part as a successor to Edgard Varèse and Le Corbusier s pavilion for the 1958 World s Fair, and Fritz Bornemann s Expo 70 Pavilion. Designed in collaboration with New York-based architects Aranda Lasch, the Arup Advanced Geometry Unit and the Music Research Centre of York University, the structure was inspired by the cosmological theories of Paul Steinhardt and Neil Turok, and offered a sonic environment in which newly commissioned works by well-known musicians were performed. This survey of the project includes a book containing Todd Eberle s photographs of the structure, a poster, a newspaper and a red vinyl LP with music by contemporary electronica musicians such as Alexej Borisov, Tommi Grönlund, Petteri Nisunen, Christian Fennesz, Carsten Nicolai, Zsolt Olejnik, Finnbogi Petursson, Franz Pomassl, Terre Thaemlitz and Zavoloka.
