Paris, Panckoucke, 1812 ; 1 vol. in-8 (21.5 x 13 cm), (4), 685 pp., 1 planche, demi-veau de l'époque, dos lisse richement orné (or et à froid), tranches marbrées, très bon état. Cet "article" pionnier, occupant les pages 537-679 de ce volume (soit près de 150 pages), fut très remarqué dès sa parution. Il n'a pas fait l'objet d'un tirage à part. Ce volume (qui commence à l'article Bange et s'achève à l'article Cancer) fait partie du célèbre dictionnaire encyclopédique en 60 volumes parus chez Panckoucke entre 1812 et 1822. Les articles, souvent remarquables, parfois très longs, sont signés et comprennent presque toujours une bibliographie. L'article de Bayle et Cayol est le plus important de ce volume. Gaspard-Laurent Bayle (1774-1816) et Jean Bruno Cayol (1787-1856), amis de Laennec, furent médecins des hôpitaux de Paris. Cayol deviendra professeur de clinique médicale. Bayle rédigera un Traité des maladies cancéreuses (ouvrage posthume publié en 1833-39) et Cayol publiera aussi un traité sur le sujet à la suite de sa Clinique Médicale en 1833. Mais c'est ce texte précurseur qui fut le plus remarqué. Le chapitre sur le cancer du sein, "le plus fréquent, le mieux connu et l'un des plus douloureux de tous les cancers", est très bien développé ; les auteurs reconnaissent certaines lésions bénignes qui avaient été confondues avec un cancer. Bayle et Cayol exposent ensuite les caractéristiques des principaux cancers de l'organisme, en insistant souvent sur le diagnostic différentiel. Ils différencient pour la première fois l'ulcère cancéreux du cancer ulcéré. Ils sont les premiers à mentionner l'existence d'un cancer du foie ("qui peut exister seul"). Le traitement du cancer est bien exposé. La dernière partie traite de questions générales : causes du cancer, diathèse cancéreuse (ou disposition au cancer), cachexie cancéreuse, contagion ou non du cancer. La bibliographie comporte 34 références (pp. 678-679). On trouve à la suite un article sur la Chirurgie du Cancer (pp. 679-685) rédigé par Delpech, le plus grand chirurgien de Montpellier à cette époque.
