Hardcover. Color-pictorial boards with white lettering. 269 pp. with 115 color plates and 52 color figures plus a few addional illustrations. Text in French. Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Musee d'Orsay. = "The smooth perfection of his work and his predominantly mythological subjects have long made Charles Gleyre a cold, conventional and blind aesthete to the revolutions of his time. It is to forget the major role played by this painter and his workshop on the Parisian art scene in the mid-nineteenth century. A republican convinced, the master of Swiss origin but Parisian of adoption formed indeed a whole generation of painters, from the neo-Greeks Gérôme and Picou to the future Impressionists: Sisley, Bazille, Renoir . Placed under the sign of the spleen and the " This book invites us to plunge back into the illusionist splendors of a singular imagination, inhabited by ambiguous creatures: Italian violent and Nubian immodest, blood-thirsty menadys, hysterical pythias, pterosaurs and other prehistoric poultry! From the wide-eyed eyes of Minerva to Hercules' pulsating hands, one must experience the mystical and humorous power with which the angelic Gleyre reactivates in depth the spells of academism." (M'O web site). VG: Two scratches on the back cover. Otherwise in excellent condition, with clean pages and tight binding.
