Die "Leiden des jungen Werther" wurden kurz nach Erscheinen konfisziert und der Vertrieb des Romans wurde "bey Zehen Thaler strafe untersagt". Dieses Verkaufsverbot veranlasste Goethes Freund Merck zu seiner Satire im Stil eines Bänkelliedes, in der er die Wirkung des Romans auf die leicht beeinflussbare Jugend parabolisch darstellt. Von der Presse wurde die Moritat mit grossem Vergnügen aufgenommen, die u.a. auch Nicolai als Bekrittler des Werther verspottet. Unter Pätus und Arria sind Werther und Lotte zu verstehen. Die berühmt gewordene Elegie "Lotte bey Werthers Grab" zählt zu den bekanntesten Wertheriaden. Die Weisen wurden als "Melodie zu Werthers Leiden" bekannt und erlangten innerhalb kurzer Zeit große Volkstümlichkeit. Sie wurden auch zu anderen Texten gesungen.
