Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Hardcover. Illustrated paper over boards with green cloth spine. Cover illustration of woman with two children in armchair is in color, and still quite bright. Shelf-wear along edges has worn paper there, slightly exposing boards. Boards are rubbed, but free of any significant markings. Rear gutter is cracked through; binding feels a bit loose, but covers and signatures remain attached. Title page (with handsome lettering and color frontispiece) is not dated. No copyright page. Containing 26 stories. 152 pages, free of marks with the exception of a few smudges in margins here and there. Beautifully illustrated throughout. Pen inscription front endpaper dated 1884, only date in book, interior otherwise clean. Lithographed and printed by Ernest Nister of Nuremberg. Illustrated by Harriet M. Bennett. Cream covers very slightly discoloured, title page and inner margins of centrefold slightly foxed. A very good plus clean copy. Bennett. Frontispiece shows a girl and boy riding the same pony. Numerous other very pretty illustrations printed sepia, some full page. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly rubbed, light rubbing to glaze on edges of covers, prize bookplate on front pastedown dated 1895, occasional very slight fingermarks, one 10 mm (½") closed margin tear. A very good plus copy. Other chromolithograph plates: country dancing; a sweep and milkmaid; the postman; a pedlar showing ribbons to the maidens; 2 nice girls and a sailor; 2 huntsmen in the pink outside The Fox and Grapes with a young serving wench (all portrayed by young children). Undated, likely 1888 first and only edition edition. Unpaginated, with 48 pages. Delightfully illustrated with 16 full page chromolithographs plus eight more chromolithographs on the text, with a further 36 sepia toned illustrations, Verse text by Robert Mack and illustrations by Harriett Bennett. Externally the corners and edges are rubbed. Inside all quite clean and in good order throughout, lacking the rear free endpaper.Overall a good copy of this classic Victorian children's illustrated book.

With an introduction in the form of a poem by E. Nesbit, and a poem by George MacDonald. Contains eleven adorable chromolithograph illustrations by Harriett M. Bennett. Not dated, but since a few of the "Spaces for Notable Events" recount the First Steps and other accomplishments of a child born in May, 1895, 1894 is a good guess. A very good copy, in color-illustrated boards backed in cloth. Light soil to covers and wear to extremities. Internally fine, with a few neat notations in ink.
