Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Hardcover, First Thus 2004 Save Our Depot 353 pages plus 25 page index and 11 page business index. Near Fine, no jacket - as issued. Dark brown cloth (imitation leather) with gilt titles and gilt image of depot - corners sharp. Only flaw is the previous owner address label on the inside covers front and back, otherwise, this book is pristine. This 2004 stated first printing is really a reprint with added information in the person and business index as stated in the introduction. The original book was published in 1980 as a 6th grade school project that grew to be recognized as an incredibly well done (and incredibly hard to find as well) volume of local history on New Haven, Michigan. If 6th graders can produce this fine a history of their community, there may be hope for Western Civilization after all. This is a VERY well done volume. There is a treasure trove of genealogical information in this volume on the residents of New Haven, Mich since it was founded. Residents, businesses, churches, photos, news articles and much more. The New Haven railway depot is one of the central points of history for this small town. The Grand Trunk Western railroad company that built the railroad station in New Haven in 1865 would handle freight, livestock, and later farm goods shipped by rail throughout the Midwest. The depot had a living quarters for the station agent and his family at one end. With rounded windows in the Italianate style, it was similar to the Smiths Creek depot that is now in Greenfield Village. In 1997, Save Our Depot, Inc, a local non-profit organization, arranged to buy the depot. The Grand Trunk Railroad did them a real favor by selling the depot building and 1.3 acres of land for $5,000, AND by allowing the depot to remain in its original location. Save Our Depot, Inc. raised about $100,000 for the restoration of the depot. Most of the money was from community development grants. An additional $50,000 worth of in-kind services were contributed. The restoration was finished in spring of 2004. The depot officially reopened on June 27, 2004 as a museum of local history. This new volume for 2004 was revised by the members of Save Our Depot, Inc (all local residents and businesses) to commemorate its restoration and opening as a museum. A solid professional effort that puts many other local history volumes to shame. A superb copy and highly recommended - LOC SSM-7.
