senza rilegatura. Condizione: quasi ottimo. Bulino misure: foglio mm 263 x 383 Pittore, incisore e cartogafro olandese. Orfano non potè dedicarsi da subito al disegno in cui dimostrava doti evidenti. Dopo una prima esperienza come stampatore di mappe, entrò nel 1589 nella bottega di Hendrick Goltzius lavorando saltuariamente anche per Jacques de Gheyn II. Probabilmente il migliore tra gli interpreti dei lavori di Goltzius incise traducendo opere di artisti da cui il maestro stesso traeva spunto. Il foglio appartiene alla serie raffigurante la Punizione di Niobe composta da otto tavole incise nel 1594 e tratte da soggetti di Polidoro da Caravaggio (Caravaggio 1500 circa - Messina 1543). Nella scena viene rappresentato un corteo di figure avvolte in toghe classiche riccamente panneggiate, recano dei doni e sono colte in pose e atteggiamenti differenti. La scena è caratterizzata da forti contrasti chiaroscurali ottenuti grazie all'abile uso del bulino. Partendo da destra vediamo il profilo del muso di un cavallo e le braccia di un uomo che lo stringono, più in basso un uomo protegge tra le braccia due papere in dono. Al centro della composizione un uomo porta il corpo di una capra dietro le spalle, un giovane allunga il braccio per accarezzarne le orecchie e una donna, di spalle allo spettatore, sembra indicare il cammino. Nelle figure di sinistra troviamo una donna che si china per aiutare un'altra donna inginocchiata a terra che sta raccogliendo un vaso. Sullo sfondo sono visibili i tronchi di due alberi e le fronde. Nel margine inferiore, incise su due colonne, quattro versi in latino "Non tulit . occupat omnes" e a destra il numero 7. Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi. Ampi margini oltre l'impronta del rame. Ottimo stato di conservazione eccetto piega verticale a metà foglio, due strappi e una piccola gora che interessano il solo margine bianco. Filigrana: giglio entro stemma coronato. Bibliografia: Hollstein 113; Bartsch 33.

Allegory on the Dutch victory over Spain at the Battle of Nieuwpoort, 1600. A triumphal carriage is drawn by chained Spanish prisoners, among them Francisco de Mendoza. Driving the carriage is the female personification of victory who carries a lance with the coats of arms of the conquered cities. Behind her are seated Prudentia and the Dutch Lion carrying a sword and a lance with a freedom hat, and from the back of the carriage sprouts an orange tree with the coat of arms of Prince Maurice (Maurits) of Orange. The procession is accompanied by Concordia, Vigilantia, Fama blowing the two trumpets, and a group of musicians playing various musical instruments. Schöne kontrastreiche Drucke, meist knapp auf die Einfassungslinie geschnitten oder mit winzigem Rändchen um diese. - Kleine Fehlstellen und Einrisse sorgfältig restauriert, vertikale Falten geglättet. Das Motiv, eines der fünf Parabeln aus dem Neuen Testament, ist in der christlichen Kunst seit dem 4. Jahrhundert nachweisbar, war aber besonders im Mittelalter populär. Die fünf klugen und die fünf törichten Jungfrauen sind in ihrer Gesamtheit seit dem 12. Jahrhundert vollplastisch an Kirchenportalen zu sehen, so an der Brauttür des Magdeburger Doms, an der Westfassade des Straßburger Münsters, am Westportal der Kathedralen von Amiens, Bourges, Notre-Dame in Paris, Reims, Sens, Auxerre und Laon. Die von Jesus angeführten klugen Jungfrauen werden lächelnd, die nachfolgenden törichten Jungfrauen hingegen mit verzweifelter Miene dargestellt; die einen rechts, die anderen links vom göttlichen Richter. Es geht um die Vorbereitung auf das Reich Gottes, und damit um den Unterschied zwischen Auserwählung und Verdammung. So symbolisieren die klugen Jungfrauen, die sich vorausschauend mit Öl für ihre Öllampen versorgt haben, die christliche Seele, die sich in fünffacher Weise tugendhaft Gott zuwendet; die törichten Jungfrauen hingegen, die zwar Öllampen haben, aber diese nicht nachfüllten, symbolisieren fünf Arten der fleischlichen Lust und Verdammnis. Die Aufmerksamkeit des Künstlers, der das Geschehen in fünf Szenen wiedergibt, gilt in gleichen Teilen den tugendhaften, sich auf den Bräutigam vorbereitenden Jungfrauen, wie auch dem frivolen, ausschweifenden und selbstsüchtigen Handeln der Törichten.
