INTRODUCTION.* On examining the work hitherto devoted by philologists to the Sceptic philosopher Sextus Empiricus I do not refer to the work of historians of philosophy we find that a critical edition of the text was published by Mutschmann: Sexti Empirici Opera Vol. I ??????e??? ?p?t?p?se?? I. III. Teubner 1912, Vol. II Adversus dogmaticos 1. \r (Adversus mathe- maticos 1. VII XI) Teubner 1914. Before publishing the third work, i. e. Adversus mathematicos 1. IVI, Mutschmann died. (In the following pages I shall use these abbreviations: PH, ? VIIXI, ? IVI.) In the matter of commentaries we are not so well off. Fabricius edition, published in 1718, is of course obsolete, and Pappenheim in 1881 explained only PH. To a certain degree a commentary can be replaced by Burys good translation (with a few notes) together with his edition of Sextus Empiricus (Sextus Empiricus, London 193336 in 3 vols., again without ? IVI). Burys edition contains several new parallels between PH and ? VIIXI, which are not mentioned by Mutschmann. There is neither a dictionary nor a complete index to Sextus Empiricus. The indices in Fabricius, Bekkers (1842) and Burys editions are by no means complete. Last [of all there is W. Heintzs book Studien zu Sextus Empiricus (Halle 1932). The critics appreciated this work as the latest considerable contribution to the textual criticism of Sextus (see Bury I. p. XLIV), but its special value is in a very subtle interpretation of the text. Heintz himself is aware of it and says (p. 4): ,Dabei steht die Interpretation zwar zu- nachst im Dienste der Textkritik, doch zeigt es sich oft genug, daB gerade die Textkritik zu einem tieferen geschichtlichen Verstandnis hinfiihrt." We may say that these and some other less important works (for the list see e. g. Oberweg-Praechter, GrundriB der Geschichte der Philosophic I.12 p. 183) attempt to interpret the subject matter of Sextuss work. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
