The first edition appeared in 1973. The Publisher's Note to this Second Edition updates on road and rail developments, the Burma Situation (due to present unrest "a land transit of Burma is thus for the time being out of the question"), By-passing Burma, and Singapore to Fremantle passenger shipping advice. Text boxes identify dangerous tollgates in Afghanistan (unlit at night), advise on rail developments between Kerman and Bandar Abbas in Iran, and caution about sticking to the A roads in Saudi Arabia. Seven inset maps show January and July temperatures, Winter and Summer rain, time changes, population, and The Far East. Tables cover distances, currency, visas and vaccinations, and Notes and Recommendations (mechanical, medical, food and accommodation, petrol, reading, monsoon). A label laid inside the wraps provides further advice.
