A richly illustrated journey through the history of the Czech avant-garde a real treat for all fans of early twentieth-century photography. To this day, few areas in the history of photography have received as little attention as that of Czech photography between the end of World War I and the beginning of the Communist regime in 1948. This is all the more astonishing because, during this period, the country produced such a large number of photographers who managed to translate the modernist vision of this era into a unique visual language. This large-format publication contains 173 major works, in color, by thirty-nine photographers of the Czech avant-garde. Alongside great names such as Franti ek Drtikol, Jaromír Funke, Jaroslav Rössler, Josef Sudek, and Anton Josef Trcka, lesser-known artists can also be discovered. With short biographies of all participating photographers, Czech Vision is not merely an exclusive art book; it can also be used as a reference work, providing an informative overview of the history of the Czech avant-garde between the world wars.

Hardcover. Orange DJ with b&w-photo illustration; black boards with orange lettering; 325 pp.; richly illustrated. The triumphal march of photography has proceeded unhindered since the early 1970s. No other artistic medium has risen in the public's esteem in quite the same way. The story of its success cannot be separated from the people who have worked toward achieving recognition of photography in the art world. They include the artists themselves, alongside curators, collectors, gallery owners, dealers, publicists and art lovers. With their expertise and personal passion, they have made photography a permanent fixture in the world of art. The Kicken Gallery is marking the occasion of its 30th anniversary by bringing together these people and protagonists supporters in an extraordinary compendium. More than 100 masterpieces from the history of photography, which the gallery have placed in private collections or museums, are presented with comments by more than 100 authors who have shaped the development of photography and its reception over the past 30 years. Covering outstanding works from Richard Avedon to Yva, from Eugène Atget to Umbo and from Bernd and Hilla Becher to Edward Weston, they tell us 'their' histories of photography. Brief profiles of photographers, authors and collections provide a look at the development of photography and a peek behind the scenes of the art business and make this volume an exclusive and attractive reference work on the history of the medium. -- WorldCat. Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very good. 25 x 32cm 102pp very good hardback exhibition catalogue published for a show at Kunsthalle HGN Duderstadt, in December 2011. Czech photographer Frantisek Drtikol (1883-1961) reinvented the genre of nude photography for the early twentieth century. Drtikol opened his Prague studio in 1907, and his nudes from this early period convey the dreamy eroticism of Art Nouveau and the foreboding accents of Prague Symbolism that he was to return to throughout his somewhat brief career (Drtikol abandoned photography for painting in 1935, and it was not until curator Anna F rov 's now legendary 1972 Prague exhibition that this work was rediscovered by a broader public). But Drtikol quickly absorbed into his photography the myriad new idioms of the interbellum years, and freighted his nudes with the dramatic lighting of silent film and the more austere geometric effects and dynamic poses of Futurism, Cubism and Bauhaus. Surveying his daring and expressive nudes of the 1920s and 1930s, this important publication charts Drtikol's adventurous treatments of the nude as they evolved in their quirky conversation with modernist innovations--from the early nymphs and femme fatales to more abstracted studies that dramatize light and kinetic qualities. Text in English, reproductions, black and white.
