Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating and largely forgotten history of the earliest European encounters with the Fijian Islands. Through meticulous research and previously unpublished documents, including the journal of William Lockerby, a young man marooned in Fiji during the sandalw…ood trade, the author reconstructs a vivid picture of this pivotal period. The narrative transports readers to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a time of exploration and exploitation in the South Pacific. We witness the gradual unveiling of the islands through the eyes of explorers like Tasman, Cook, and Bligh, and experience the precarious and often fraught interactions between European sailors and the indigenous Fijian population. The book goes beyond mere historical recounting to explore themes of cultural clash, misunderstanding, and the complex dynamics of trade and colonialism. It sheds light on the resilience and adaptability of the Fijian people in the face of unprecedented challenges, offering a nuanced perspective on their rich cultural heritage. Ultimately, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of first contact between cultures, and the importance of understanding the past to navigate the present and future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrellocxi, 250 pp. Second series. Volume LII. Octavo. Blue blind stamped cloth boards. Gilt lettering on the spine. Gilt emblem of a ship on the cover. Spine is a bit sunned and boards have some shelf and handling wear. Top edge is trimmed, other edges are untrimmed. Edges are somewhat dust soiled. Previous owners' bookplates on the f…ront end papers. Within, a clean volume with extremely minimal staining or foxing. Illustrated with three plates. Includes three fold out maps in a pocket on the end paper. Maps have some light foxing but are in good overall condition. As a note of provenance, this book was previously owned by Andrew David, Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Navy. His book plate is on the front free end paper. Another previous owner was likely Malcolm MacDonald, a British politician and diplomat. MacDonald was a government minister during World War II and served as Governor of Kenya in 1963. A bookplate on the front paste down states, "From the library of The Rt. Hon. Malcolm MacDonald, P.C., O.M." Another interesting note is on the front free end paper. "Miss Gardner King, From Hon. Everard im Thurn with the very best wishes and hearty thanks for the beautiful illustrations." Everard Im Thurn was the editor of this volume and Agnes Gardener King (1856 - 1924) was its illustrator.
