Through meticulous research and previously unpublished documents, including the journal of William Lockerby, a young man marooned in Fiji during the sandalwood trade, the author reconstructs a vivid picture of this pivotal period. The narrative transports readers to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a time of exploration and exploitation in the South Pacific. We witness the gradual unveiling of the islands through the eyes of explorers like Tasman, Cook, and Bligh, and experience the precarious and often fraught interactions between European sailors and the indigenous Fijian population. The book goes beyond mere historical recounting to explore themes of cultural clash, misunderstanding, and the complex dynamics of trade and colonialism. It sheds light on the resilience and adaptability of the Fijian people in the face of unprecedented challenges, offering a nuanced perspective on their rich cultural heritage. Ultimately, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of first contact between cultures, and the importance of understanding the past to navigate the present and future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
