This book contains the First, Second, and Fifth Editions in full, together with the textual variants in the Third and Fourth Editions, thus providing the reader with a complete rendition of FitzGerald's work on The Rubáiyát,over a period of more than 25 years. There are, in addition, a general Introduction by Laurence Housman, an essay on FitzGerald by G.F. Maine, FitzGerald's essay on Omar, the Notes to the Second Edition, which contains the largest number of quatrains (110), and a Glossary. The illustrations, of which there are twelve, were specially drawn for this edition by Robert Stewart Sherriffs." About the Author: The rubáiyát (the plural form of quatrain, or a verse unit of four lines) were written around 1120 by the Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyám (1048?-1122). He left upwards of 1,000 epigrams on the transience of existence and the uselessness of mathematics, science, or religion to untangle the knotted meaning of life. The illustrator: Robert Steward Sherriffs (1906-1960) was a caricaturist and illustrator. He attended Edinburgh College of Art where he initially studied heraldic design in addition to fine art.
