From the estate of Hilda Mason and her husband Prof Eric Axelson. Eric Axelson was Professor of History at The University of the Witwatersrand. In 1938, after research conducted in Portugal, England and Italy he discovered the Padrão de São Gregório at Kwaaihoek in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This Padrão or stone cross, was erected by Bartolomeu Dias on 12 March 1488 when he became the first European navigator to round the Southern tip of Africa, in search of a sea route to India.
