Il traverse ensuite une période difficile ,il perd sa mère en 1728, sa maîtresse, la comédienne Adrienne Lecouvreur en 1730, puis son père en 1733. De plus, la Cour l'a oublié pendant son aventure de Courlande. Maurice se consacre alors à la rédaction d'un ouvrage sur la guerre et la tactique. Il l'intitule Mes Rêveries. Publié à titre posthume à Amsterdam en 1757 par Arestée et Merkus, il s'inspire de la lecture du Commentaire sur Polybe du chevalier de Folard, Polybe lui-même, les traités du marquis de Puységur, La Science du chef d'armée, d'Onosandre et l'Abrégé des questions militaires de Végèce. L'uvre du comte de Saxe comprend deux parties « Les parties de détail » et « Les parties sublimes ».

From the broad margins this may well be a Large Paper or similar superior issue. The later bookplate is that of Sir John Ogilvy, 9th Baronet, (1803-1890), sometime MP for Dundee and Convener of Forfarshire. De Saxe (1696-1750) was a distinguished soldier of the first half of the eighteenth century, serving first the Holy Roman Empire, and then the Imperial Army, before French service as Marshal General of France. He is remembered for his victories during the Austrian Succession, most notably at Fontenoy in 1745, and for this most influential military treatise published shortly after his death. Édition portative publiée l'année de l'originale. L'ouvrage, publié de manière posthume en 1756, fut composé pour la première fois en 1732. Toutefois c'est le second manuscrit de l'oeuvre écrit en 1740 et légué au comte Zacchari Pazzi de Bonneville qui servit à l'impression des éditions, et non la première mouture couchée sur le papier en 1732. Cette édition est illustrée de 11 planches dépliantes gravées sur cuivre. Cet important ouvrage militaire dans lequel le Comte de Saxe passe en revue tous les facteurs, tous les éléments nécessaires à la conduite réussie des batailles, des uniformes à la nourriture, à la stratégie, est écrit dans un style simple, clair et intelligible. Il se termine par des "Réflexions sur la propagation de l'espèce humaine", destiné à contrebalancer l'art de détruire les populations ; l'auteur livre ses pensées sur la prolifération de la démographie et les moyens de l'augmenter. Le terme de « rêveries » se réfère non pas au sens moderne de divagations mais à celui d'espoirs réalisés et de pensées secrètes. L'exemplaire du second marquis d'Osmond, relié à ses armes. Fils aîné de René-Henri, brigadier des armées, et de Françoise-Jeanne d'Osmond, René-Jean, marquis d'Osmond (Chateau d'Osmond, dans l'Orne, 1707-Saint-Just, 1771) entra dans l'armée où il devint lieutenant au régiment de roi-infanterie en 1727, puis capitaine de cavalerie du comte de Clermont le 1er avril 1734. Il fut nommé gouverneur d'Argentan en 1755 et fait chevalier de Saint-Louis. Il avait épousé en 1737 Marie-Anne-Thérèse Turgot, dame des Tourailles, veuve de Pierre de Neuville, marquis de Cléray, dont il n'eut pas d'enfants. Reliure de l'époque (habiles restaurations aux coiffes et charnières). Édition originale de l'art de la guerre du maréchal de Saxe, publiée à titre posthume par Zacharie de Pazzi de Bonneville. Fait Maréchal général des camps et armées de Louis XV en 1743, le vainqueur de Fontenoy (1745) s'est inspiré de ses expériences sur les champs de bataille pour proposer des solutions nouvelles dans le domaine tactique et technique. Adepte de la «petite guerre» (harcèlement par troupes légères) et d'une forme modifiée de l'ordre mince, le maréchal de Saxe embrasse ici largement son sujet, traitant successivement des troupes (recrutement, formation, entretien, etc), des différentes armes (infanterie, cavalerie, etc), du maniement des armes à feu, de la manoeuvre, et livre des réflexions sur la guerre en général, la stratégie et la tactique selon les situations, l'attaque des retranchements, le général d'armée, etc. Un supplément de 15 pages et 21 planches paru en complément de la seconde édition de 1758 est parfois réuni avec, ce qui n'est pas le cas dans notre exemplaire. Très bon exemplaire en veau d'époque. Provenance : De la bibliothèque de William Danby Esqr. (17521833) avec ex-libris gravé. Ecrivain anglais et grand collectionneur connu pour avoir possédé le seul portrait de Shakespeare peint de son vivant (Swinton Park, North Yorkshire) .
