Paris, Melchior Tavernier, 1639, 378x345mm, cuvette 360x280mm, renfort au pli, manque 1mm au centre Cette rare carte de l'Asie est une édition réduite de la carte antérieure de Bertius, elle-même copiée de la carte de 1631 d'Henricus Hondius, Asia Recens Summa Cura Delineata (basée sur la cart…e de Jodocus Hondius de 1623). La carte s'étend de la péninsule arabique aux Indes orientales et comprend une cartographie conjecturale fascinante, on peut y voir la muraille de Chine. La mer Caspienne est orientée horizontalement et la côte nord-est de la Russie est considérablement tronquée. Le mythique lac Chiamay est représenté dans l'ouest de la Chine avec cinq rivières coulant vers le sud. Ce lac, apparu pour la première fois sur une carte de Gastaldi en 1554 d'après les récits de l'explorateur portugais Fernão Mendes Pinto, fut repris par de nombreux cartographes malgré son inexistence. Il persista sur les cartes jusqu'en 1751 (Vaugondy) avant d'être reconnu comme un mythe cartographique au XIXe siècle. La Corée apparaît comme une péninsule allongée et le Japon suit le modèle Ortelius/Teixeira, en position horizontale, typique du début du XVIIe siècle. Un large océan sépare la côte est de l'Asie de l'Amérique, partiellement masquée par le cartouche de titre. La carte est ornée de deux cartouches décoratifs en entrelacs : l'un dans le coin supérieur gauche avec l'empreinte de l'éditeur, l'autre dans le coin supérieur droit portant le titre et l'attribution à Bertius. Parmi les éléments décoratifs visibles sur cette édition, un éléphant apparaît dans le nord de l'Inde, près du lac Chiamay et la Grande Muraille de Chine est également illustrée, séparant la Chine de la Tartarie. Cette carte figurait souvent dans Le Monde, ou la description Generale de ses Quatre Parties de Pierre d'Avity. This attractive separately-issued map by Tavernier, based on Petrus Bertius' work, encompasses the entire Asian continent from the Arabian Peninsula to the East Indies and Japan. A sliver of America appears in the upper right corner.

The Patriarchate of Antioch was one of the oldest Christian sees, established in the 1st century, and maintained its influence for centuries as a religious and cultural centre in the Near East. Melchior Tavernier (1594-1665) was a leading French engraver, publisher and printer, active in Paris during the first half of the 17th century. He produced maps, atlases and geographical works, both his own and in collaboration with other European cartographers of his time. El mapa representa un extenso territorio que abarca la región histórica de Siria y sus alrededores, con Antioquía como centro principal. Esta antigua circunscripción eclesiástica del cristianismo oriental se extendía por amplias zonas del Levante mediterráneo. El Patriarcado de Antioquía fue una de las sedes cristianas más antiguas, establecida en el siglo I, y mantuvo su influencia durante siglos como centro religioso y cultural en Oriente Próximo. Melchior Tavernier (1594-1665) fue un destacado grabador, editor e impresor francés, activo en París durante la primera mitad del siglo XVII. Originally cut for Champlain by Melchior Tavernier in 1619, only a single proof of that year -- at the John Carter Brown Library -- survives.
