China, acquerello misure: mm 270 x 375 Pittore e intellettuale italiano, impegnato nel rinnovamento del ruolo dell'artista e dell'Istruzione in generale durante i fermenti rivoluzionari del Risorgimento e nelle istituzioni post-unitarie. Nel 1836 inizia a frequentare l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, allievo dei pittori Costanzo Angelini e Camillo Guerra, realizzando dipinti in stile romantico con influenze medievali. Nel 1848 vince un concorso e si trasferisce a Roma per continuare a studiare, tanto i modelli antichi, quanto la pittura nazarena allora in voga. E' poi a Firenze dove prende parte ai dibattiti dei macchiaioli al famoso Caffè Michelangiolo. Viaggia a Milano e a Torino ma anche nelle principali capitali europee, confrontandosi e stringendo amicizia con i pittori. A Firenze, grazie anche all'amicizia con i pittori Filippo e Giuseppe Palizzi si allontana dallo stile accademico e perfeziona un suo modus operandi che unisce armoniosamente verismo e romanticismo, riproponendo modelli neoseicenteschi, sene bibliche e orientali caratterizzate da intensa libertà di luce e di colore. Studio, probabilmente dal vero, di due figure orientali, apparentemente non in relazione fra loro, ma in delicato equilibrio nello spazio del foglio. A sinistra una figura rannicchiata disegnata ad acquerello con un tratto vivace e sicuro attento al chiaroscuro. A destra una figura in piedi rivolta all'osservatore eseguita con un segno leggero a china. Molte sono le composizioni abbondantemente animate a soggetto orientale o di ispirazione biblica dipinte dall'autore con figure simili. In particolare un figura in piedi simile si trova nel dipinto I Posseduti del 1870, oggi conservato presso la Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma che illustra l'episodio evangelico della guarigione degli indemoniati di Gerasa. Al verso del disegno a matita: (N 36 disegni) li ultimi sono costati L 800 i piccoli e L 1000 i grandi, scritta probabilmente apposta da un mercante o da un collezionista. Inchiostro fresco e ben conservato su carta vergellata con parziale filigrana pendente entro elaborato cerchio.
