Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback trade, very good condition, black & white & colour text-photos, maps, glossy paper, minor edgewear, written word front free flyleaf. 167 pp. Graeme Henderson and Myra Stanbury relate the story of HMS Sirius of the First Fleet. Built as the Baltic trading ship Berwick in 1780-81, the Sirius is known to most Australians as the principal naval consort to the First Fleet. Her epic voyage to Botany Bay completed, the Sirius made another lengthy journey in 1788, through ice and storms to Cape Town to fetch supplies for the struggling colony. Her career, charted in this book, ended abruptly in 1790. During the first stage of a voyage to China, again to buy desperately-needed supplies, she struck a reef in Sydney Bay, Norfolk Island. In 1983 maritime archaeologists organised diving expeditions to the wreck site to recover what remained of the vessel. (Publication assisted by the Australian Bicentennial Authority.).

In 1771, two young, ambitious, French naval officers and Breton nobles, Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen and his second-in-commandLouis de Saint Alouarn, were given permission by the King of France, Louis XV, to undertake a voyage to discover and claim in the name of France, Terres Australes. 1772: The French Annexation of New Holland is a story of this epic voyage; a retelling of a chapter of Australian history whose significance has failed to attract the recognition it deserves.

Offshore sit the wrecks of the SS Fin, The Zvir and the SS PerthÂand on the coastline remain the remnants of what was once the Norwegian Bay Whaling Station that operated periodically from 1915 until 1957.âOriginally built in 1915 and owned by the Norwegian Whaling Company, the whaling station was used as a shore baseÂfor its steam powered whale chasers until 1920.ÂIt was then purchased by the Australian North West Whaling Company who ran the station and its three ships, with a mainly north European crew until it was no longer viable to run the station and it was closed in 1929.âFollowing World War II, the station was revamped and brought back into operation.ÂAt the time being one of the most advanced whaling stations of the period with state of the art steam powered processing facilities, permanent housing, two jetties,Âslipways and flensing decks. During this timeÂit once again operated from 1949 until 1957 when operations moved to a Carnarvon based station.âTodayÂthe foundations of the many buildings still remain at the site amongst the rusted and twisted remains of the oil holding tanks, various boilers and machinery used for Âprocessing ofÂthe whale oil. "The wreck of the 462-ton barque Eglinton off the coast of Wanneroo, some 50 north of Perth in Western Australia, on 3 September 1852, was the sensation of the year. Not only did it add to the list of unfortunate maritime incidents for which the Western Australian coast had become well known, but also deprived a very bare colonial market of a large portion of valuable cargo." (WA Museum) This book is a very detailed report on the maritime archaeological survey of the barque. It includes many illustrations of of the items found on the ship, and a substabtial bibliography,
