One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. William Holl, The Elder (1771-1838) Was An English Engraver, Thought To Be Of German Background, And A Political Progressive. Holl At The Time Of The Spa Fields Riots In December 1816 Took The Risk Of Concealing James Watson, Son Of James Watson (1766-1838) The Radical Leader, And Aiding His Departure For The Usa. He Was A Pioneer In Using Steel Plates For Banknotes. Holl Was Noted For His Numerous Engraved Portraits, Some Being For Edmund Lodge's Portraits Of Illustrious Personages Of Great Britain. He Was Employed In Engraving Henry Corbould's Drawings Of The Antique Marbles In The British Museum, And Engraved, Among Other Subjects, The Boar Which Killed Adonis Brought Before Venus, After Richard Westall. Holl Did Not Push Himself Forward, And His Work Often Appeared Under The Name Of Others. In The 1820S, Holl Was One Of The Early Adopters Of The Steel Plate Engraving Technique Pioneered By Charles Warren; Others In The Field Were William Thomas Fry And Charles Marr. William Holl The Younger (1807 - 1871) Was An English Portrait And Figure Engraver, Noted For His Book Illustrations. The Eldest Of Four Sons Of William Holl The Elder (C.1771-1838), He Was Taught Engraving By His Father - At First Stipple And Later Line On Steel. The First Portrait Engraving Produced On His Own Was That Of Thomas Cranmer In May 1829 For Inclusion In Edmund Lodge's Portraits Of Illustrious Personages. He Contributed Further Work To This Publication Between 1829 And 1835 After Artists Such As Van Loo, Holbein, Van Dyck, Lely, Godfrey Kneller And Daniel Mytens. He Was A Founder Member Of The Chalcographic Society Started By Several Notable Engravers In 1830. Holl Also Produced Portraits For William Jerdan's National Portrait Gallery (1830-34) And For The 1834 Chambers's Biographical Dictionary Of Eminent Scotsmen. Working With His Brother Francis Holl (1815-84), He Provided Engraved Illustrations To Finden's 1837 Tableaux Of National Character And Gallery Of Beauty Of 1841 And To The 1840 Edition Of The Land Of Burns. The Third Brother Charles Holl (C.1810-1882) Aided William Throughout His Career. The Youngest Brother Benjamin (1808-1884) Also Achieved Notable Success As A Portrait And Figure Engraver And Later Emigrated To The Usa. In The 1840S His Major Works Were Engravings After William Powell Frith, Illustrating The Poems Of Thomas Moore "Beauties Of Moore" (1840) And Scriptural Engravings After Various Artists Such As Raphael, Rembrandt, Benjamin West And James Northcote For Inclusion In Blackie & Sons' Imperial Family Bible (1844) And John Kitto's Gallery Of Scripture Engravings (1846-49). He Also Produced Portraits For The Imperial Dictionary (1861) And Thomas Baines's Yorkshire Past And Present (1871-77).…

Large line engraving, 1628, approximately 415 x 290 mm excluding the later mount. A substantially complete impression depicting Charles I half-length within an oval frame, wearing an elaborate lace collar, richly embroidered costume and armour. The engraved image remains presentable. Fragile, with tears and small losses to the lower edge, tears to the upper corners and shorter tears to the side edges, together with creasing, age toning, wear and occasional light staining. Extensively attached to a later mount with old paper tape to the reverse. Good condition only. A handsome portrait of Charles I, published in 1628, only three years after his accession to the throne. The portrait was engraved by the distinguished Dutch engraver Willem Jacobsz Delff after an original painting by Daniel Mytens, Charles I's principal court painter before the arrival of Van Dyck. The composition presents the young king at the beginning of his reign wearing the insignia of the Order of the Garter. The inscription around the oval reads "RATIONI SI VIS OMNIA SUBICERE, TE SUBICE EI", translated as "If you wish to subject all things to reason, subject yourself to it." Intended as a princely maxim, it presents the ideal of a ruler governed by reason whilst reminding him that he must first submit himself to reason. In light of the constitutional struggles that later engulfed Charles's reign, the motto carries an unintended historical resonance. The extensive Latin dedication beneath the portrait addresses Charles as "the most serene, most powerful and most excellent Prince, Charles, by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith." Delff identifies himself as the engraver and dedicates the portrait to the king. The final line records that the engraving was issued under both royal privilege and the privilege of the States General for a period of eight years, is dated 1628, and concludes "Daniel Mytens pinxit", confirming that the original portrait was painted by Mytens. A scarce portrait of Charles I, closely corresponding in size to the recorded institutional example in the National Portrait Gallery and offered here with condition issues as listed.…
