Title-page printed in red and black. With 53 engravings, all with original hand-color: 44 double-page maps (including a double-hemisphere world map), 4 folding maps, 4 double-page charts and 1 double-page illustrations of types of fortifications. Bound in later diced calf over marbled boards. On the spine, six raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel. Crest and motto ("PAX ET SPES") of Pease gilt to the panels. Marbled end-papers.Repaired in 2023 by Brockman (full report available). Maps numbered in ink in an old hand verso. Manuscript alphabetical index (in French) to the verso of the final sheet, calling for 59 illustrations. Ownership signature of "Geo Champagne" to the title-page and to the index. Wardington bookplate to the rear paste-down.Brothers Reinier (1698-1750) and Josua (1704-1765) Ottens were governors of Amsterdam's guild of booksellers; this gave them unprecedented access to the maps of Europe -- France in particular. The present work (which is sometimes found with an engraved title-page as well) contains maps by Jaillot, de Wit, de l'Isle, de Fer and Visscher inter alia. In the XVIIc and XVIIIc the Dutch were superlative cartographers in their own right, but also freely adapted -- a less generous term might be "pirated" -- the maps of others. The organization of maps is quite traditional: from the double-hemisphere map continue several dozen maps of Europe. Toward the end appear the rest of the world: Asia, Africa and the Americas. The final sheet gathers up a variety of types of star and other fortifications in use historically and around the world. George Champagne (sometimes Champagné; 1751-1828) was descended of a prominent line of French protestant émigrés (Huguenots) to England. He served as Rector of Twickenham from 1802-1818, and from 1802-1828 was Canon of (St. George's Chapel) Windsor, occupying the third stall. Champagne is remembered by the gift of some £233 of Old South Sea annuities he made in 1822 to the Dean and Canons of Windsor which was used to set up a fund to buy books or clothes for students of the National School at Windsor. Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease (1924-2005), 2nd Baron Wardington, was a book collector of great renown, building a splendid library at his Oxfordshire home, Wardington Manor. His particular interest was the very finest examples of cartography. His sale (Sotheby's London, 10 October 2006; the present item was lot 362) was a landmark in the field, and its catalogue practically a reference work in its own right.…

The bookplate is notable in that it belonged to a woman, which is somewhat unusual for the period. She seems to have been a Duchess, but I have not been able to identify her. An image of her bookplate is to be found online in a Grolier Society exhibition of Women's Bookplates. The publishers Reinier and Josua Ottens are best known for their great Atlas of 1745, but they printed a very few other illustrated titles as well - one on architecture and one on fish - from what I've been able to find. A beautiful book. I find only half a dozen copies in libraries worldwide; only 2 in the United States. None have identified the exact publication date other than to say First half of the 18th century, which coincides with the rest of the Ottens' work. Please email with question or to request photos.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio. (22 2/8 x 14 inches). Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Engraved dedication leaf, and 32 fine double-page, and or folding, engraved maps with contemporary hand-color in outline ("Register" and plate one, the double-hemisphere world map loose). Contemporary maroon backed speckled paper boards (extremely worn). AN ENTIRELY UNSOPHISTICATED AND INTERNALLY FINE COPY of the first Dutch edition of this magnificent sea atlas, dedicated to the Dutch East India Company, first published in French Louis Renard as the "Atlas de la Navigation" in Amsterdam in 1715. He printed the maps from the plates used by Frederik de Wit for his sea-atlas, corrected them and substituted his name for de Wit's. The Otten brothers published another French edition, also in Amsterdam in 1739, with their imprint on the title-page, but the maps still signed by Renard. This their Dutch edition of 1745 has new text and removes Renard's name from the maps. In addition to improving nearly all the plates by adding place names and altering coast lines, shoals, and soundings this edition contains six new maps, including two world maps, the most significant of which is by Edmund Halley which shows Isogones illustrating his discoveries concerning gravitational forces. The others are another world map, Arctic and Antarctic projections, and a map of the postal routes of Europe. Koeman IV, p. 432-435; Phillips, Atlases, 601. Cf. THE ANDRAULT de LANGERON COPY, which, at Christie's London (12 July 2023, lot 176) ACHIEVED $57,330. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Signed by Author(s).…

Aggiungi al carrelloMap. Condizione: Good. [Description en français ci-après] Original antique map of the kingdom of Algiers, engraved by Josua Ottens and published in Amsterdam in 1730. This map depicts the territory of the Regency of Algiers, divided into its provinces, on the North African coast. It covers the area from present-day northern Algeria to Tunisia, showing the territorial organization of this region under Ottoman rule. The map includes the main coastal cities such as Algiers, Oran, Bona, and Constantine, as well as the internal administrative divisions of the kingdom. In the lower right corner, there is a nautical chart of the bay of Algiers with the relief of its coast. During the eighteenth century, the Regency of Algiers was an autonomous entity within the Ottoman Empire, known for its corsair activity in the Mediterranean and its trade relations with European powers. Josua Ottens was a Dutch publisher and cartographer active in Amsterdam during the first half of the eighteenth century, member of the Ottens family that published numerous atlases and maps of Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. Copper engraving. Hand colored. Map. Engraving with original hand-coloring. Image measures 17" x 21.5". This scarce map of Algeria and its vicinity includes the Western Mediterranean, part of North Africa, and part of Spain around Alicante. Published circa 1740, the map extends from the Moulouya River in present-day Morocco to Tabarka in Tunisia, and south to the Saharan Atlas. The map also includes a large inset in the lower left of the Bay of Alger (El-Jazir). Beautifully details the Barbary Coast which was at the time known for the Barbary Pirates, who for centuries, terrorized the Western Mediterranean. Richly engraved mountains decrease in size perspectivally as they near the Mediterranean, which takes up the top part of the map. Two decorative compass roses in the sea are attached by rhumblines. The map is in good condition and lined to support original color wash, with minor wear to the edges. Centerfold repaired on verso. Minor foxing, especially along margins.
