With 53 engravings, all with original hand-color: 44 double-page maps (including a double-hemisphere world map), 4 folding maps, 4 double-page charts and 1 double-page illustrations of types of fortifications. Bound in later diced calf over marbled boards. On the spine, six raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel. Crest and motto ("PAX ET SPES") of Pease gilt to the panels. Marbled end-papers.Repaired in 2023 by Brockman (full report available). Maps numbered in ink in an old hand verso. Manuscript alphabetical index (in French) to the verso of the final sheet, calling for 59 illustrations. Ownership signature of "Geo Champagne" to the title-page and to the index. Wardington bookplate to the rear paste-down.Brothers Reinier (1698-1750) and Josua (1704-1765) Ottens were governors of Amsterdam's guild of booksellers; this gave them unprecedented access to the maps of Europe -- France in particular. The present work (which is sometimes found with an engraved title-page as well) contains maps by Jaillot, de Wit, de l'Isle, de Fer and Visscher inter alia. In the XVIIc and XVIIIc the Dutch were superlative cartographers in their own right, but also freely adapted -- a less generous term might be "pirated" -- the maps of others. The organization of maps is quite traditional: from the double-hemisphere map continue several dozen maps of Europe. Toward the end appear the rest of the world: Asia, Africa and the Americas. The final sheet gathers up a variety of types of star and other fortifications in use historically and around the world. George Champagne (sometimes Champagné; 1751-1828) was descended of a prominent line of French protestant émigrés (Huguenots) to England. He served as Rector of Twickenham from 1802-1818, and from 1802-1828 was Canon of (St. George's Chapel) Windsor, occupying the third stall. Champagne is remembered by the gift of some £233 of Old South Sea annuities he made in 1822 to the Dean and Canons of Windsor which was used to set up a fund to buy books or clothes for students of the National School at Windsor. Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease (1924-2005), 2nd Baron Wardington, was a book collector of great renown, building a splendid library at his Oxfordshire home, Wardington Manor. His particular interest was the very finest examples of cartography. His sale (Sotheby's London, 10 October 2006; the present item was lot 362) was a landmark in the field, and its catalogue practically a reference work in its own right.…

Only a few of the plates have engravers or artists names. "T. van Vianen" "T Lamsue Lt" "Later" Ionckman". The bookplate is notable in that it belonged to a woman, which is somewhat unusual for the period. She seems to have been a Duchess, but I have not been able to identify her. An image of her bookplate is to be found online in a Grolier Society exhibition of Women's Bookplates. The publishers Reinier and Josua Ottens are best known for their great Atlas of 1745, but they printed a very few other illustrated titles as well - one on architecture and one on fish - from what I've been able to find. A beautiful book. I find only half a dozen copies in libraries worldwide; only 2 in the United States. None have identified the exact publication date other than to say First half of the 18th century, which coincides with the rest of the Ottens' work. Please email with question or to request photos.…

They had an interesting and varied output, as one of the leading map-publishers of their period in Amsterdam, including this fine map of Persia.…

A magnificent map of Asia at a time of transition from Dutch dominance in the region. In 1700, at about the time that the cartography in this map dates the supremacy of the Dutch East India Company, or the VOC began to wain. Other companies, like the French East India Company and the Danish East India Company also started to make inroads in the area, based on a better knowledge of the cartography on their part, and a weakening in the importance of the traditional commodities essential to the success of the VOC trading operation. The crucial moment came with the Battle of Colachel in 1741 when the Dutch commander Captain Eustachius De Lannoy was captured by the Indian army, the first time an organized Asian power had overcome European military technology and tactics, signalling the decline of Dutch power in India. The brothers Reiner and Josua Ottens assembled collections of maps in atlas form from the 1720s until about 1750, many were taken from the stocks of the leading publishers of the day in Amsterdam or Paris, no doubt as a result of the influence which they were able to exert on their fellow members in the Amsterdam Compagnie van Boekverkopers or Booksellers Guild, of which both Reiner and Josua were at some time Governors.…

The map was produced by the French cartographer G. De'Lisle and printed and sold by the Ottens brothers, Reiner and Joshua, in Amsterdam. 18TH CENTURY MECKLENBURG "Ducatus Meklenburgicus in quo sunt Ducatus Vandaliae et Meklenburgi Comitatus et Episcopatus Swerinensis Rostochiense et Stargardiense Dom." [The Duchy of Mecklenburg, comprising the Duchy of Vandalia (situated between the rivers Oder and Vistula in present-day Poland) and Mecklenburg, together with the counties and the bishopric of Schwerin, as well as Rostock and Stargard.] Copper engraving published by Reinier and Josua Ottens in 1757. Contemporary hand colouring. 51 × 60 cm. This map provides a detailed representation of the Duchy of Mecklenburg, situated on the Baltic Sea. Since 1701, the territory had been divided into two principalities: Mecklenburg-Schwerin, with Schwerin as its residence, and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, centred around Neustrelitz. Important cities are clearly marked, including Rostock, Schwerin, Güstrow, and Stargard. Wismar, a former Hanseatic city, was formally still under Swedish rule at the time, but from 1749 had been pledged to Mecklenburg for a period of one hundred years. The landscape is characterised by numerous lakesof which the Müritz is the largesttogether with extensive farmland and forests. The economy was predominantly agrarian and dominated by the landed nobility, who also held political power in the estates assembly. Serfdom and bondage persisted here longer than in many other parts of Germany, leaving the peasantry with few freedoms. Although cities such as Rostock and Wismar still recalled the prosperous trading past of the Hanseatic League, Mecklenburg in the 18th century stood culturally and economically in the shadow of stronger German states. The map is adorned with a cloud-shaped title cartouche. Putti hold aloft the coat of arms of Mecklenburg with the imperial crown, as well as the region's rich agricultural produce. MONUMENTAL WALL MAP OF FRIESLAND THE 'VEGELIN MAP' "Nieuwe Caert van Frieslant. Vermeerdert en verbetert op ordre der Ed. Mo. Heeren Gedeputeerde Staeten" [New Map of Friesland. Enlarged and improved by order of the Noble and Mighty Lords of the Provincial Executive], published by Reinier and Josua Ottens in Amsterdam and Tobias van Dessel in Leeuwarden in 1739, better known as the 'Vegelin Map'. Copper engraving assembled from six sheets. With original hand colouring. Size. 113.5 × 125 cm. This monumental showpiece map takes its name from Johan Vegelin van Claerbergen (16901773), 'grietman' and a member of the Provincial Executive of Friesland. As grietman, he headed both the administration and judiciary of the grietenij, the Frisian administrative district that may be regarded as the predecessor of the later municipality. In 1734 Vegelin proposed to the States that a wall map of Friesland, begun decades earlier but never completed, should finally be published. The first surveys for this map of Friesland had been carried out by Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa. In 1698 he published an atlas containing maps of the individual grietenijen; three maps of the rural quarters and a provincial map were also planned. These final four maps, however, never appeared. Schotanus intended to publish the three rural quarters on several sheets so that together they could be assembled into a large wall map of Friesland. The States, however, were unwilling to pay the additional 6,470 guilders required, and the project was delayed. When Schotanus died in 1704, he left behind seven only partially completed copperplates. The plates subsequently passed into the hands of François Halma, who in 1712 was commissioned by the States to republish the Schotanus atlas of 1698. The maps of the grietenijen were revised and supplemented, and the new edition appeared in 1718. For reasons that remain unclear, the maps of the rural quarters were again omitted. In 1730 the plates passed from the Halma firm to Tobias van Dessel, provincial printer in Leeuwarden. Four years later Vegelin van Claerbergen revived the old plan. The Provincial Executive then commissioned Van Dessel and Reinier and Josua Ottens to further elaborate, update and complete the existing plates. The cartographic content is based largely on the maps of the grietenijen of 1698 and their revised edition of 1718. At the same time, changes that had occurred since then were incorporated, including those in Het Bildt and around Bakkeveen and Langweer. The enormous quantity of information contained in the individual maps of the grietenijen had to be compressed into a much smaller area. The result is an exceptionally dense map image in which towns and villages, hamlets, roads, dykes, canals, rivers, lakes, peatlands, polders and other features of the landscape are rendered in remarkable detail. The manner in which the map was produced is particularly ingenious. Seven sheets were printed: two for Oostergo, two for Westergo and three for Zevenwolden. These could be issued separately as maps of the three rural quarters, or together as seven individual sheets. Only six sheets were required for the large provincial map. One of the sheets of Zevenwolden contains only Gaasterland, which for this purpose had already been included on one of the sheets of Westergo. By trimming the various sheets along indicated lines and removing the overlapping sections, they could be joined seamlessly to form a single map of the whole of Friesland. The cartography is surrounded by an exceptionally rich heraldic border. At the top, the title cartouche appears beneath the crowned arms of Friesland, flanked by two lions and surrounded by references to the Frisian landscape and its principal sources of livelihood. At upper left are the arms of Westergo, accompanied by those of its nine grietenijen; at upper right Oostergo appears with the arms of its eleven grietenijen. At lower right is Zevenwolden with the arms of its ten grietenijen. At lower left the eleven Frisian cities are brought together. Putti carry the crowned coats of arms on sweeping ribbons around the margins of the map. The heraldry thus forms, as it were, an administrative framework around the geographical representation of the province. The original terms of publication likewise underline the representative character of the map. Van Dessel was granted permission to publish the map for a period of five years and was required to supply the States with one hundred coloured copies free of charge, as well as a further sixteen copies mounted on canvas, for which payment was made. The Vegelin Map of 1739 thus represented the final realization of an ambitious cartographic project begun by Bernardus Schotanus several decades earlier. Its detailed mapping of the Frisian landscape, the administrative division into rural quarters and their grietenijen, and its exuberant provincial heraldry combine to create one of the most impressive cartographic images of eighteenth-century Friesland. A CELEBRATED MAP OF THE GOOI "Nieuwe kaart van Gooilandt" [new map of the Gooi area], copper engraving made by Hendrik Post, published in Amsterdam by Reinier and Josua Ottens, c. 17261738. Coloured by a later hand. Size (plate mark): 52 × 81 cm. This large and richly executed map shows Naarden, Huizen, Blaricum, Laren, Bussum, Hilversum and Eemnes set within a varied landscape of open arable fields, heathland, woods, roads, ponds and low-lying pasture lands. Naarden appears as a compact fortified town with star-shaped defences, whereas 's-Graveland is carefully delineated as a regular sequence of narrow plots with country houses and gardens. Its orientation is unusual to the modern eye: east-south-east is at the top. Hendrik Post based his map on the large-scale surveys of Justus van Broekhuysen of 1709 and Maurits Walraven of 1723, but reduced the area to a scale of approximately 1:25,000 to 1:26,000. In order to include the Maatlanden, the pasture lands along the Zuiderzee, he placed them in a separate inset at upper left. The result was not a simple reduction of earlier maps, but a general map combining accurate topography with a distinctly decorative character. Particularly noteworthy is the attention given to 's-Graveland. Its elongated reclamation plots are shown with country houses and the names of prominent owners. One of the parcels is prominently labelled "Fiscael", referring to Hendrik Bicker 16151651), to whom the map is dedicated. The title cartouche identifies him as "Schepen" (alderman) of Amsterdam, councillor and advocate-fiscal to the Admiralty, as well as "meestersknaap" of Gooiland: a judicial officer in matters concerning forestry and hunting. His family arms surmount the cartouche, which is further adorned with Diana, goddess of the hunt, putti, hunting dogs and sheep. In 1725, Bicker had a stone orientation table erected on the Tafelberg near Blaricum, indicating the visible settlements and points of the compass. The circular image at the bottom of the map reproduces this "compas". At lower left, a table records the areas of thirty-seven named plots of land in Rhineland measure. The map thus also preserves the landscape of the lands of the "erfgooiers": communal lands whose rights of use were of considerable economic importance to the villages of the Gooi. The map provides not only a geographical overview, but also a splendid image of the Gooi and its landowners. Until the map of the heathland division of 1843 appeared, it remained the principal topographical representation of the region. Price: Euro 11.500,-. …

THE DUTCH COLONY OF BERBICE (PRESENT-DAY GUYANA) "Nieuwe Gemeten Kaart van de Colonie de Berbice met der zelver Plantagien en de Namen der Bezitters" Copper engraving published by Reinier and Josua Ottens in 1740. With original hand colouring. Size: approx. 48.6 × 96.5 cm. The Dutch colony of Berbice originated in the early seventeenth century as a private enterprise along the river of the same name, west of the Corantijn. In 1624 the Vlissingen merchants Abraham van Pere and Pieter van Rhee established a small trading post here. Three years later an agreement was concluded with the Zeeland Chamber of the Dutch West India Company, granting Berbice the status of a patroonship (a Dutch form of feudal land grant). The settlement subsequently developed into a plantation colony, focused on the export of sugar, coffee, and cotton, sustained by the forced labour of enslaved people. The administrative and military heart of the colony was Fort Nassau, founded in 1627 about 88 kilometres inland along the Berbice River (shown centrally on the map). The fort was initially managed privately by the Van Pere family. Around 1630 it was relocated to a more strategically advantageous site, where a new fort was constructed with earthen ramparts and wooden palisades. Over the course of the seventeenth century, Fort Nassau was repeatedly expanded and reinforced. The colony was vulnerable to attacks by privateers and hostile powers. In 1665, Commander Bergenaer, with the support of Indigenous allies, succeeded in repelling an English attack. More destructive were the French incursions at the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century. In 1689 privateers under Jean du Casse caused extensive damage along the river, after which a ransom of 20,000 guilders was paid. In 1712 a new attack followed under Jacques Cassard, and once again total destruction was averted only by the payment of an enormous sum of 300,000 guilders in money, goods, and enslaved people. In that same year, Fort Nassau was destroyed. The financial consequences proved fatal for the heirs of the original patrons. Although Berbice had been granted as a hereditary fief to the Van Pere family by the West India Company in 1678, they were forced after 1712 to sell the colony. In 1720 Berbice came into the hands of a consortium of Amsterdam merchants, who founded the Sociëteit van Berbice. From that point onward, the colony was governed by a governor acting on behalf of this private trading company. During the Berbice Rebellion of 1763, Fort Nassau was definitively destroyed. A pre-existing fort near the mouth of the Berbice River was subsequently expanded and strengthened and, under the name Nieuw-Amsterdam, became the new residence of the governor. In 1782 the territory was occupied by the British, but later that same year it was recaptured by a French squadron and returned to the Dutch Republic at the peace settlement. After the French Period, however, the British did not return the colony. Price: Euro 850,-.…

SEA CHART OF THE COAST OF SOUTH AFRICA WITH INSET OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE "Cimbebas et Caffariae Littora a Catenbela ad Promontorium Bonae Spei" [The coasts of Cimbebasia and Kaffraria from Catumbela to the Cape of Good Hope]. Copper engraving made around 1730 by Reinier and Josua Ottens in Amsterdam. With original hand colouring. Size: 43.5 × 55 cm. This fine sea chart depicts the southwestern coast of Africa from Catumbela (in present-day Angola) to the Cape of Good Hope. Rich in maritime history and crucial during the Age of Discovery, the region is rendered with ornate detail, emphasizing both its exotic allure and its strategic significance to Dutch seafaring. The map encompasses regions inhabited by the Khoikhoi and San peoples, among others. Trading centres such as Catumbela formed part of the extensive network for the trade in gold, ivory, and slaves that linked the African interior with the coast and beyond. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this region was a vital link in the Dutch maritime route for the spice trade and other commercial enterprises between Europe and Asia. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), founded in 1602, dominated these routes and established several trading posts and colonies along the African coast. The Cape of Good Hope, in particular, was of great importance as a replenishment station for ships navigating the waters between Europe and Asia. Explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias, who first rounded the Cape in 1488, and later Dutch navigators, charted these waters with increasing precision, enhancing their accessibility and strategic value. The Dutch colony of Cape Town, founded in 1652, soon grew into a major centre of Dutch influence. It attracted European settlers and rapidly developed into a hub of trade and communication in the region. Meanwhile, the Portuguese had established settlements in Angola and Mozambique and maintained a strong foothold in coastal trade networks. In the second half of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century, European commerce in the region was largely driven by the transatlantic slave trade. Dutch and Portuguese ships were among the most active participants, deporting millions of Africans to the Americas. The southwestern coast of Africa was a key source region, where large numbers of people were captured and enslaved by local rulers and traders. Alongside the slave trade, European commerce in this period also included the exchange of ivory, gold, and spices. Elephant ivory, in particular, was highly sought after by the Dutch, prized in Europe for the production of luxury goods and fine carvings. The elaborate title cartouche at the top features lions, a gazelle, and an unidentifiable reptile, along with European traders and local men with spears and an imposing headdress. The inset map at lower right provides a more detailed representation of the environs and coastline of the Cape of Good Hope. Price: Euro 750,-.…

THE EXCAVATED LANDS AROUND NIEUWKOOP, ZEVENHOVEN, NIEUWVEEN, KORTERAAR, AND AARLANDERVEEN "Nieuwe aftekening tot droogmakinge van de uytgeveende landen geleegen in Rynland, Amstelland, & Utrecht als Nieukoop, Sevenhoven, Nieuveen, Schoot, de graaflykheyt Korteraar, Aarlanderveen, en d' Proosdy" [New delineation for the drainage of the excavated lands located in Rijnland, Amstelland, & Utrecht, such as Nieuwkoop, Zevenhoven, Nieuwveen, Schoot, the County of Korteraar, Aarlanderveen, and the deanery.] Copper engraving based on the design by Lodewijk Kraakhorst, published in 1742 by Reinier and Josua Ottens. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 41.5 x 56.7 cm. From the 14th century onwards, the demand for peat as fuel in the western Netherlands increased explosively. Due to the lack of easily drainable high peat complexes, many areas switched to "wet" peat extraction, leading to the formation of peat pits with narrow strips of land between them. The work of surveyor Lodewijk Kraakhorst shows the condition of the Nieuwkoop and Zevenhoven lakes at the time, which had formed over years of peat dredging. This rare map was created in connection with plans to drain the areaplans that were only realized between 1796 and 1809. The map clearly illustrates how much the Dutch polder landscape has changed over the centuries. Peat extraction in the Nieuwkoopse Plassen ceased around 1850. After that, dredging continued only in the large water bodies (mainly in the Noordeinderplas and Zuideinderplas). The drained peat lakes were subsequently used for agriculture. Price: Euro 1.450,-.…

Amsterdam : [R. & I. Ottens, 1745]. Copperplate engraving, 490 x 560 mm (image); 565 x 665 mm (sheet), hand coloured, small repair to tear in cartouche and a couple of pinholes, else fine. A striking example of Reiner and Joshua Ottens' chart of the Pacific Ocean, an updated state of Frederick De Wit?s chart of 1675. The chart, based on a similar Goos chart of 1666, was first published in de Wit?s Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas in 1675. It was updated to include Compagnies Land in a second state before 1690. Renard re-issued this state in ca. 1715, with this being the final state, which includes New Britain, Tartary, and more central Pacific islands, and was issued in Atlas van zeevaart en koophandel door de geheele weereldt circa 1745. The map shows details of seventeenth century Dutch discoveries in van Diemen's Land, the Gulf of Carpentaria and North Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. North of the islands of Japan is a large protrusion that extends into the border of the map, Terre de Iesso; to the east is another set of islands called Terre de la Compagnie. These North Pacific chimeras often appeared on maps of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this state, Tartary is included and the shapes of Iesso and Compagnies Land have been altered. The map prominently shows California as a large island. The map is highly decorative with a large cartouche including a portrait of Pacific navigator Magellan. Masted ships sail across the Pacific, with numerous rhumb lines crossing the sea. SOUTHERN UKRAINE AND CRIMEA DURING THE RUSSO-TURKISH WAR 1736-1737 "Theatrum Belli Ao. MDCCXXXVII a milite Augustae Russorum Imperatricis adversus Turcas Tattarosque". Copper engraving on two joined sheets, published by Reinier & Josua Ottens in Amsterdam in 1737. With original hand colouring and later additions. Size: 66,8 x 47,5 cm. Superb map depicting the theatre of the Russo-Turkish War in present-day Ukraine, showing the Russian operation of 1736-1737. The war began in July 1735, when the Russians invaded Ottoman-controlled territories along the Black Sea coast. The main cause of the war was a territorial dispute over the border between the two empires in the Caucasus region. Russia sought to expand its influence in the area and gain control over the Black Sea trade routes, while the Ottomans sought to maintain their control over the region. The Russian forces, led by field marshal Burkhard Christoph von Münnich (1683-1767), achieved some initial success and captured several Ottoman strongholds in the Black Sea region. However, the Ottoman forces, led by Grand Vizier Topal Osman Pasha, launched a counter-offensive and managed to recapture some of the lost territories. The war continued for two years, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, the Russians eventually gained the upper hand and in 1739, the Treaty of Ni was signed, which ended the conflict. The treaty recognized Russia's control over the territories it had captured, including Azov and the Black Sea coast, and allowed the Russian Empire to establish a permanent presence in the region. The war had significant implications for the balance of power in Europe and the Middle East, as it marked the beginning of Russia's expansionist policies in the region and the decline of the Ottoman Empire's power and influence. The map provides excellent detail of the fortifications including the Ukrainian line - a system of defenses from the Dnipro to the Donetz rivers. It was compiled from manuscripts by the military cartographer Carl von Frauendorff. The march of the Russian army under the command of field marshal Münnich is shown from the crossing of the Dnieper at Vlasovka ("Wlassowka") to Ochakiv ("Otzakoff"), which his army took by storm on 2 July 1737. The rectangles which are used to represent the army are diagonally shaded. Münnich's marches to and from the Crimea in 1736 are shown, together with the siege of Kinburn by Russian troops, begun on 23 July, and other operational movements of the armies during 1736-1737. "Afbeelding van de Stadt Utrecht" [View of the City of Utrecht]. Copper engraving on four joined sheets, made by Herman Saftleven in 1669, here in an updated version by Isaak Ottens, published by his sons Reinier and Josua, c. 1720. Size: 35 × 154 cm. Panoramic profile of the city of Utrecht seen from the west, with the coat of arms of the province in the upper left and that of the city of Utrecht in the upper right. It is "a very ancient, famous and magnificent city, situated on the middle course of the Rhine in Batavia." From left to right, the following buildings are depicted: St Job's Hospital (for sufferers from syphilis), St Martin's Hospital, the Weerdpoort (on the northern side of the present-day city centre, where the Weerdbrug now stands), the Jacobikerk (whose slender spire had been blown down during the great summer storm of 1674), the Plompetoren (one of the old defensive towers, demolished in 1832), the Catharijnepoort (one of the former principal landward entrances to the city, demolished in 1845), the Wittevrouwenklooster (demolished after a fire in 1710, but nevertheless still shown here), the Hertenhuis (a fortified urban residence that still survives today), Oudaen (another surviving fortified house on the Oudegracht), the fortified house Drakenburg (whose façade also collapsed during the storm of 1674), the fortified houses Fresenburch and Blankenburg, the Janskerk (on the Janskerkhof), the fortified house Putruwiel, the fortified house Keyserrijck (now incorporated into the Town Hall), the fortified house Groenewoude, the fortified house Lichtenberg (demolished in 1826), the Hasenberg house (part of the Town Hall, demolished in 1826), the church of the former Hieronymus Convent, St Peter's Church, the Buurkerk (decommissioned as a church in 1975), Utrecht Cathedral (shown here after its nave had collapsed in 1674 through what was called the Donderbasuyne Godts, or "God's thunder trumpet"), the Bishop's Palace, the Mariakerk (demolished during the first half of the nineteenth century), the church of St Paul's Abbey (demolished in 1707), the church of the Abraham Dole Convent, the chapel of the Teutonic House (whose church had likewise collapsed in 1674), the church of the Regulierenklooster (then used as an orphanage), St Catherine's Church, St Bartholomew's Hospital (for vagrants, the sick and the elderly), the Smeetoren (used for astronomical and meteorological observations and demolished around 1855), the tower of St Servatius' Abbey (demolished in 1840), the Geertekerk, the chapel of the Agnietenklooster (then an orphanage for the children of craftsmen), the Nicolaikerk, and finally, at the far right, the Bijlhouwerstoren (used for hulling barley and producing pearl barley, and demolished in 1872). The print was updated in 1684 to record the changes that had taken place since 1669. In particular, some of the church buildings damaged or destroyed during the devastating storm of 1674 were altered, as were the trees lining the city moat and those on either side of the Kruisvaart. It is interesting that in early eighteenth-century panoramas of Utrecht, the cathedral is often still shown in its full glory, complete with its nave. Apparently, depicting Utrecht with such a conspicuous gap in its most important building was considered visually unattractive. Herman Saftleven was born in Rotterdam in 1609. He settled in Utrecht in 16321633. Although Saftleven had been comfortably well off during much of his life, he died in impoverished circumstances in 1685: his house at Achter St. Pieter 7 and its contents were sold at public auction by judicial decree. "Stoel des Oorlogs in America waar in vertoont werden alle desself voornaamste eylande", copper engraving published by Reinier and Josua Ottens in Amsterdam c. 1720. With original hand colouring. Size: 49,5 x 58 cm. The Dutch titel "stoel des oorlogs" [area of war] refers to the original purpose of the map: to illustrate the theater of the Nine Years' War, one of the many inter-imperial conflicts of this period. At sea, there are several obstructions noted, which underlines how tricky it is to navigate these waters. Small islands, rocks, and sand banks are all included. Three compass roses also dot the seas. Additionally, anchor points are marked, although this map would be used mare as a reference material than as a navigational aid. In Florida, the peninsula is called Tegesta Prov. The province of Tegesta is a Dutch convention pioneered by Hessel Gerritz, hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, and Johannes de Laet. It refers to the Tegesta people, an indigenous group active near what is today Miami-Dade. The Tegesta were one of the first groups to meet Europeans, specifically the conquistadores Ponce de Leòn and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The Nine Years' War (1688-97), or the War of the Grand Alliance, is referred to as King Williams' War in North America. As with many seventeenth and eighteenth-century conflicts, this was a war for power in Europe that spilled into colonies around the world. Louis XIV of France invaded the Holy Roman Empire in September 1688 in order to make them accept his recent territorial gains. However, the German princes resisted, forming a large coalition that included Savoy, the Spanish, the Dutch and the English. In the Caribbean, fighting focused on harassing French convoys intent on resupplying their colonies. Of particular note on this map are the shipping routes used by the Spanish Empire, the area's most powerful imperial power at this time. Included is the Bahamas Channel route to Havana, the route from Veracruz to Havana, Havana to Cartagena, and Cartagena to Spain. The Spanish Empire operated a closed trading system, only allowing Spanish vessels to dock at and trade with ports in their colonies. The arrival of the galleon annually or semi-annually was a major event in the port cities, triggering fairs and festivities. Of course, much illicit trade also went on, often with Spain's enemies, the French, Dutch and English. The Ottens brothers based this map of the West Indies on Danckerts' map of the same title. Danckerts updated the Gulf coast and Mississippi River delta based on the important map of Guillaume Delisle, but the Florida peninsula is filled with spurious mountains. Price: Euro 1.250,-.…

Prijs: Euro 750,-.…
