Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Hardcover. Ivory cloth stamped wihth red and white lettering, brown and black illustration of Sudanese dervish on the front cover. Edgeworn. Spine faded much browner than the ivory/tan covers. Some wear at the hinges. Silk endpapers and gold borders stamped on the inside covers. Page edge gilt and extremely beautifully decorated -- gauffereed edges are an expensive and scarce decoration on the page-edges, in which the gilding is stamped with patterns. Text block clean and tight and will all plated present and in good condition. Inscription on the first blank page, "August 1, 1945. Sicilian Hof Potsdam, Germany. Last conference of the Big Three. Harry S. Truman (per ARG), Clement Atlee (per ARG), Joseph Stalin (per ARG), Abram R. Gennet (per ARG). For my M-- Happy Birthday. C'est Bon!" A slip of paper tucked inside says, "The book was purchased for American cigarettes by A.R. Genned, military attache. This book came from the Cecil enhof Castle (above Potsdam?) where Truman, Stalin, Churchill, Atlee met for the Potsdam Conference." Inside the book (loose) is an autograph sentiment by Slatin; he writes "My dear Doyle. Herewith the empty Sack! Yours very sincerely, R. Slatin." Paper folded twice and with a spot or two of foxing or drips. Rudolf Slatin was an adventurer, also Administrator in Sudan/Darfur at the end of the 19th century. He was knighted by both English and German governments. The connection between the book, the Postsdam Conference, the signature and the extraordinarily nice gauffered edges is a complete mystery to me, but here it is.
