University of Pennsylvania Press, 1950. (illustratore). First Edition. University of Pennsylvania Press, 1950. First Edition of a Controversial Study of Female Criminality Pollak, Otto [1908-1998]. The Criminality of Women. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1950. xxi, 180 pp. Publisher's red cloth hardcover, very good, in a moderately worn, price clipped, dust jacket. Very good. $150. * First edition. Still controversial, The Criminality of Women argues that women commit as many crimes as men, but they evade justice more often because they are better able to hide their crimes, suggesting this skill comes from the need to hide physical symptoms during menstruation. Pollak proposed the "chivalry thesis," arguing that male police and judges are more lenient with female offenders. This chivalrous attitude results in fewer arrests, prosecutions, and convictions for women. Pollak identified several crimes often committed by women that tend to go unreported. He argued that women's domestic roles provide opportunities to commit crimes, such as poisoning husbands or abusing children, that may go unnoticed. He also suggested that shoplifting and criminal abortions, which he claimed were largely perpetrated by women, were undercounted. Despite its flaws and reliance on stereotypical assumptions, Pollak's work is recognized as one of the first major attempts to examine female criminality. It provided a starting point for later researchers in criminology to study women and the gender-based disparities in official crime data. Pollak's assertions, particularly his biological explanations, have been criticized as unfounded and sexist. Later research and analysis have debunked many of his claims, demonstrating a more complex relationship between gender and crime.
