Several covers feature lithographed illustrations, notably that of Danse des Fées (Dance of the Fairies) , depicting a fairy scene by a waterfall, and that of Gounod and Mayer?s Frühlingslied (Spring Song ) , with the title printed in chromolithography over a colourful floral composition. Copy with the front cover detached and the spine missing, exposing the book?s seams. Several pages bear oleographic ownership stamps. A collection of documentary interest, comprising 23 piano scores, bound into a single volume, probably compiled by a private collector between c. 1871 and c. 1885. The repertoire documents the publishing circuits that supplied Portuguese salons in the third quarter of the 19th century, with publications from Paris (Brandus, Meissonnier, Bureau Central de Musique, E. Gérard & Cie), Vienna (Diabelli, C.A. Spina, Bösendorfer), Braunschweig (H. Litolff) and Lisbon (Sassetti). The two editions by Sassetti & Cia. ? Thalberg?s Tarentelle [Op. 65] (plate No. 480, documented at the Portuguese National Library, call number C.N. 702 A.) and Döhler?s Tarentelle, Op. 39 (not catalogued at the Portuguese National Library) ? constitute the Portuguese link in the collection. This volume covers almost four decades of European salon music, from Alkan (Saltarelle Op. 23, 1844) to Johann Strauss II (Op. 346, 1871). It opens with Prudent?s Danse des Fées , dedicated to Hector Berlioz, in the Nouvelle Édition by Brandus & Dufour (1858?1872); it also includes the same composer?s Villanelle , Op. 40, in an earlier edition by Brandus et Cie. The collection is rounded off by Hummel?s Grande Sonate a quatre mains , Op. 92 (Diabelli, Vienna), Alkan?s Saltarelle (Bureau Central de Musique, Paris), five instalments of Johann Strauss II?s Répertoire des Danses published in Paris by E. Gérard & Cie, and six pieces by Eduard and Josef Strauss published by C.A. Spina of Vienna. Sassetti & Cia. was the leading music publisher and retailer in Lisbon during the second half of the 19th century; it was founded in 1848 by João Baptista Sassetti on Rua Nova do Carmo, with the status of a ?privileged establishment? It published sheet music under its own catalogue numbering system and also acted as a distributor of European publications.
