Ricaut fut secrétaire de l'Ambassadeur d'Angleterre à Constantinople de 1661 à 1667. Il rédigea en 1663 les articles du traité de paix conclu entre l'Angleterre et le gouvernement Ottoman et obtint le privilège pour les navires anglais d'être exemptés du droit de visite. Elle s'achève avec l'année 1662.Deuxième édition de la traduction française de The History of the Turkish Empire, from the year 1623, to the year 1677, laquelle remonte à 1682. L'ouvrage anglais était paru en 1680 comme une continuation de Richard Knolles (Generall historie of the Turks, qui était originellement parue en 1603).Paul Ricaut ou Rycaut (1629-1700) avait suivi en 1661 le comte de Winchelsea dans son ambassade extraordinaire auprès de Mehmet IV. Pendant les huit années que dura cette ambassade, et durant lesquelles il s?instruisit à fond sur les m?urs, les usages et la religion des Turcs, Rycaut se rendit deux fois à Londres pour les affaires du gouvernement. Il passa quelque temps dans le camp du vizir Coproli en Hongrie, et publia la Capitulation des articles du traité de paix conclu entre la Porte et son pays. Sinon bons exemplaires. Édition originale de cette traduction due à Jean-Baptiste de Rosemond (1657-17.) historien protestant d'origine anglaise. L'édition anglaise parut originellement en 1680 comme continuation de celle donnée en 1603 par Richard Knolles. Considéré comme l'un des meilleurs écrits concernant l'état religieux et militaire de la Turquie, il est dû à la plume de Paul Ricaut (1629-1700) historien britannique qui suivit en 1661 comme secrétaire le comte de Winchelsea dans l'ambassade extraordinaire de Charles II, envoyé auprès du sultan Ahmet IV à Constantinople. Après huit années de service il en rapporta son expérience et sa connaissance instruite des moeurs, des usages et de la religion des turcs sous les règnes des empereurs Mourad IV, Ibrahim Ier, Mehmed IV, au travers de cet ouvrage qui suscita un vif intérêt et en fit une des premières relations exactes du monde ottoman. Leather title label on smooth spine. Vellum slightly soiled, some pages with some minor stains but on the whole a fine/good copy. Rycaut ( London 1629…- Hamburg 1700) wrote this study on the Greek and Armenian Churches at the command of king Charles II; as stated in the title of the first - English - edition ( London, John Starkey 1679). The Middelburg edition is the first French translation . The author , being in diplomatic service at Constantinopel and Smyrna, was one of the first in Western Europe to describe and understand the difficulties of the Greek Church at that time nearly being crushed between Turkish and Catholic beliefs.

In-8°; antiporta figurata incisa su rame e pp. (16), 661, (3), e 19 tavole finemente incise su rame da Le Clerc, che raffigurano con eleganza i costumi degli ottomani, dalle dame al sultano, ai militari ai dervisci al sultano ecc, in ambientazioni contestualizzate. nel testo un rame che raffigura il copricapo detto "turban". Leg…atura in piena pelle con dorso restaurato. Traduzione in francese dell'importante opera sulla Turchia di Paul Ricault, diplomatico inglese inviato a Costantinopoli. Quest'opera ebbe molte traduzioni dato il suo successo, ed è ancora oggi di rilevante interesse storico per lo studio dell'impero ottomano.

Venezia, Presso Combi & La Noù, 1672, in-4, pergamena coeva rinforzata al dorso, con titolo manoscritto, pp. (16), 296. Doppio frontespizio: tipografico, con marca (Minerva assisa che impugna lancia e scudo, attributo: la civetta) e calcografico, con tavola incisa in rame da suor Isabella Piccini del Convento di S. Croce a Venez…ia, autrice anche delle 17 (su 18) illustrazioni nel testo + una vignetta. Fregi ed iniziali xilografici. Minime mancanze al margine del piatto posteriore, che ha la cerniera allentata. Qualche brunitura. A questa bella edizione veneziana riccamente illustrata, apparsa pochi anni dopo l'originale inglese (distrutta dall'incendio di Londra la 1a edizione del 1666, fa testo la 2a del 1668) manca purtroppo la carta S4, sostituita da facsimile perfettamente calligrafato a mano, ma privo d'illustrazione; conseguentemente anche il testo (sia al recto che al verso) seppur completo, è disposto diversamente che nell'originale (infatti i richiami non corrispondono), poichè questa prevedeva lo spazio dedicato alla parte incisa. Ricordiamo come curiosità che Sebastiano Combi si associò dal 1650 a Giovanni La Nou(e), olandese di origine francese, stabilitosi a Venezia nel 1646-47.
