The rare second Latin edition of the account of Schouten and Le Maire's important voyage. Schouten and Le Maire's expedition was sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants known as the Australian Company, a consortium in competition with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The expedition's primary aim was to search for Terra Australis from the east, and it was the last seventeenth-century voyage to do so. In entering the Pacific from the Atlantic in 1616, Schouten and Le Maire sailed to the south of the Straits of Magellan, naming Cape Horn and discovering a new navigable passage to its south. Striking out westward across the Pacific in search of Terra Australis, they sailed through the Tuamotu archipelago, and were the first Europeans to visit the islands of Tonga. The expedition charted a substantial part of the coasts of New Ireland and New Guinea, before eventually reaching Batavia. In June of 1615, the Eendracht and the Hoorn departed from Holland under the command of Willem Schouten (1567-1625) and Jacob le Maire (1585-1616) in search of "Terra Australis" and a route to the far East via the northeast passage. Their search for the mythical southern continent was unsuccessful. On the 29th of January 1616, however, Schouten and his crew became the first Europeans to round Cape Horn (the southernmost headland in Tierra del Fuego, Chile), which Schouten subsequently named after his hometown. By rounding the Tierra del Fuego, Schouten and le Maire proved its size to be relatively inconsequential, and thus not a part of the fabled southern continent. The voyage continued northwest until they reached Batavia, a presidency established by the Dutch East India Company in the present-day Indonesian archipelago. Their ship and goods were seized upon arrival, as the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) believed that Schouten and le Maire's route violated the VOC's trade monopoly. Disgraced and stripped of their possessions, Schouten and le Maire were placed on a ship bound for the Netherlands; le Maire died only eight days into the journey. When Schouten arrived in the Netherlands alone, he petitioned the VOC to return his journals for publication. With the help of the cartographer and publisher Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), Schouten's account of the voyage was made available to the public in 1618. Its popularity was striking, and it was quickly translated into French (as here), German, and Latin. Whether the work was wholly Schouten's was disputed in court by le Maire's relatives, but the suit was unable to halt publication. It was not until 1622 that le Maire's papers were released in full by the VOC and a more accurate and balanced account could be published. The Journal is therefore not only a pillar of Dutch travel literature, but a symbol of the battles fought for prestige amongst explorers of the XVIIc. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. This account of Schouten's voyage was first printed in Dutch in 1617. All editions of great rarity. Willem Schouten, Dutch explorer whose 1615 16 expedition discovered a new route, the Drake Passage, around the southern tip of South America, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific. The Dutch East India Company held a monopoly on all East Indies trade by ships routed through the Strait of Magellan when, in 1615, an Amsterdam merchant, Isaac Le Maire, mounted an expedition to find a new route to the Pacific. His son Jakob and veteran sea captain Schouten led the voyage that set sail in May 1615 with two ships the second piloted by Schouten s brother Jan. By December they reached the far southeastern coast of South America, where the smaller ship caught fire and had to be abandoned. Sailing south the next month, Schouten passed through the Le Maire Strait between Tierra Del Fuego and Estados (Staten) Island and sailed into the Pacific. He gave the southernmost tip of America the name Cape Horn (Dutch: Kaap Hoorn). This new route, now known as the Drake Passage, was longer but much simpler than the established passage through the Strait of Magellan. The expedition went on to discover new islands (later named the Schouten Islands) off the northwestern coast of New Guinea before reaching its destination, Batavia, Java (now Jakarta, Indonesia.), in October 1616. There the Dutch governor, aware that any new route might end the privileged position of the Dutch East India Company, refused to believe that Schouten had discovered a new route westward and confiscated his cargo. Schouten and Le Maire were charged with infringing on the company s monopoly and were sent home to Holland; Le Maire died along the way. Upon Schouten s return to the Netherlands, his (and Le Maire s) diaries, complete with maps, were published and proved valuable to subsequent explorers. There is a facsimile of the original title page. Contemporary vellum binding, 19cm x 14.5cm, most of the spine is missing. The only plate which is present is the plate of Porto Desire showing the Dutch ships at anchor and the Jacht Hoorn on fire. The plate also shows seamen uncovering a grave where skeletons of men 10-11 feet long were found. Old name and date on front endpaper: "Adrian Boot Ingeniero de su Magsd 1623 = Mexico". Adrian Boot was a Dutch hydrographer who was appointed by King Philip III to investigate the drainage project of Mexico City and take charge of operations. Schouten's book was published four years before the account by Jakob Le Maire.…
