Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a unique and intimate portrait of Oscar Wilde, the celebrated Irish poet and playwright. The author, a close friend of Wilde's, provides a deeply personal account of their relationship, offering insights into Wilde's personality, artistic sensibilities, and private li…fe. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century Paris, the book delves into Wilde's intellectual and creative circles, examining his interactions with prominent figures in literature and art. The author paints a compelling picture of Wilde as a complex and multifaceted individual, highlighting both his brilliance and his flaws. We see his passionate pursuit of beauty and his fascination with the decadent movement, but also his vulnerability and tendency towards self-destruction. The book explores the tragic irony of Wilde's life, a life marked by both extraordinary talent and self-inflicted ruin. This book offers a rare glimpse into the mind and heart of a literary giant, challenging preconceived notions and revealing the depth and complexity of a man whose legacy continues to captivate and inspire. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover / Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First edition. Hardback. A famous French criminal case which occurred during the French Revolution. During the night of 27 and 28 April 1796, a mail coach was ambushed outside Paris by several men who stole a large sum of money (7 million livres). The stage coach was suppos…ed to go to Lyons from Paris, carrying money for the Army of Italy. Both the driver and the armed guard were brutally killed. A third man onboard (whose identity was never established) disappeared without a trace.Following investigations, six men (Couriol, Guénot, Richard, Bruer, Bernard and Lesurques) were arrested. After a trial, four of them were guillotined (except Guénot and Richard). Later, Joseph Lesurques was rehabilitated: he always claimed innocence (the other convicts also said he had nothing to do with the robbery). Due to a physical resemblance with one of the suspects, he probably was mistaken by witnesses. Today, this case is remembered in France for being a famous example of miscarriage of justice. 317pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Browned and foxed edges and eps, sunned covers. Vg.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Hardback, in fair condition overall. The binding shows general age-related wear, with rubbing and some loss to the extremities of the front and rear covers, as well as the head and foot of the spine. Internally, the pages are lightly browned but remain otherwise clean and legi…ble throughout. There are no inscriptions apart from the author's inscription and signature to the front. A small tear is present to one leaf near the rear of the volume (see images). The text comprises 185 pages, followed by a further 17 pages of publisher's advertisements at the end. A rare first edition, signed copy of At the Closed Door (1902), Robert H. Sherard's strikingly direct and immersive account of British migration to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Unlike many journalists of his era, Sherard does not merely observe or interview: he embeds himself fully in the condition he seeks to expose. Writing "in propria persona," he becomes the pauper emigrant, subjecting himself to the indignities, anxieties, and brutalities of the journey and its aftermath. The result is a vivid, first-hand narrative that reads less as reportage and more as lived experience—an early and compelling example of Edwardian investigative writing. Sherard (1861-1943), an Oxford-educated journalist and author, is best known as one of the earliest biographers of Oscar Wilde, but his broader body of work reflects a sustained engagement with questions of poverty, labour, and social justice. Across a career spanning some three dozen publications, he repeatedly turned his attention to the lives of the urban and working poor, notably in works such as The White Slaves of England (1897) and The Cry of the Poor (1901). At the Closed Door belongs squarely within this reformist tradition, combining narrative force with a clear social purpose. The text itself is both emotive and unflinching. Sherard documents the hopes of emigrants drawn by the promise of opportunity in America, only to encounter exploitation at every stage of their journey. He records the deceit of agents and smugglers, the degrading conditions aboard ship—where passengers are "packed like sardines"—and the hostility and suspicion awaiting them on arrival in New York. His focus on the treatment of "pauper emigrants" by American officials situates the work within a broader historical moment marked by increasing anxiety around immigration, class, and national identity. At a time when New York functioned as the principal gateway to the United States, and debates around inspection, exclusion, and fitness were intensifying, Sherard's account offers a rare contemporary perspective from within the system itself. This copy is particularly desirable. The work is scarce both commercially and institutionally, with relatively few recorded holdings and no readily traceable market history. Signed copies are less commonly encountered than unsigned examples, and the present inscription adds a further layer of interest and collectability. As a first edition of an uncommon and socially significant work, it represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a piece of early twentieth-century investigative literature, distinguished both by its method and its subject matter. Signed by Author(s).
