Vasco Núñez de Balboa (c. 1475 - around January 12-21, 1519) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador known for being the first European to lead an expedition that reached the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. In 1513, Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and sighted the Pacific, claiming the ocean and all of its shores for the Spanish Crown. This achievement played a significant role in establishing Spain's claim to the vast territories of the Pacific coast of the Americas. Despite his exploration successes, Balboa's later years were marked by political challenges and conflicts. Accused of treason, he was arrested and executed in 1519 on the orders of the Spanish Crown. Vasco Núñez de Balboa is remembered as a key figure in the early exploration and colonization of the Americas.
