Otakar Storch-Marien (1897-1974) was a writer, poet, and the publisher of the Aventinum publishing house. He also founded the Kmen modern publishi…ng club and bookstore, the central locus of Czech literary modernism in Prague. Josef Šima (1891-1971) spent most of his mature years in France, but collaborated frequently with the Aventinum press in a series of important editions as illustrator during rhe interwar era. Venus with a Red Wig is a loose continuation of the book Lide z baru (People from the Bar), which Šíma also illustrated. For Venus, Šíma drew fourteen ink pen-and-ink drawings that, with their lightness and lyricism (in several drawings with an erotic accent), elevate the verses of the author. This copy signed by Storch-Marien. The original wrappers were extremely fragile and often missing. Here the front wrapper is preserved in a later paper cover. Josef Šima (illustratore).
