Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. English text; Paperback; 20 x 24.6 cm; 1 Kg; 256 pages with colour Illustrations throughout; Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London from the 3rd of July to the 28th of September 1997.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) holds an assured place in the history of world art as one of the greatest and best-loved masters of the woodblock print. Together with Katsushika Hokusai, he is the leading creator of landscape imagery in japanese printmaking. Acclaimed in the West as "the artist of mist, snow and rain", Hiroshige certainly possesses a poetic sensibility particularly well attuned to evoking atmospheric effects. Hiroshige is a master of the passing moment, subtly orchestrating a wide range of colours to articulate mood. Including maps, a chronology, glossary and bibliography, this volume offers an excellent introduction to the mainly-sided oeuvre of an artist who, perhaps more specifically "Japanese" than Hokusai, was described by Pisarro as a "marvellous Impressionist".

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 25.5 x 37 cm.; ; 2.1 kg.; 256 pages with 119 color plates.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket shows edge wear, several wear marks, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. The top and bottom of the spine is scuffed and slightly chipped, tear at the top right side of the back cover. Interior with minor signs of wear.; This edition of One Hundred Famous Views of Edo uses an original typeface designed by Alpha Omega especially for this book. The typeface is called Hiroshige, in honor of the artist of this series. The type is designed to create an active interplay between the text and the full-page illustrations, with an Asian, calligraphic flair.; Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 splendid woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-nineteenth-century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series, reproduced here in its entirety for the first time in a Western edition, contains many of Hiroshige's best-loved and most extraordinary prints. It is a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the shogunate. Like Venice and Florence in the 14th and 15th centuries, or Paris in the age of the Impressionists, the city of Edo, with its superb landmarks and its festive display of a uniquely elegant urban life, exerts a special and compelling fascination. Hiroshige, perhaps the most brilliant of the ukiyo-e printmakers, revealed the panorama of his city's activities with subtle and vivid visual anecdotes: fireworks seen from the river, fashionable geishas on parade, the kabuki district at night, intimate moments in the gardens and teahouses. But more than a historical document, the views are really vignettes presented from a remarkable variety of vantage points-aerial perspectives, multiple viewpoints, framed repoussoirs - and incorporate the natural beauty and atmospheric effects of every season crisp autumn moonlight, cherry blossoms and irises in the spring, summer rain on the waterways, and temples in the winter snow. It is a tour de force of artistic vision and printmaking craftsmanship that epitomizes the inventiveness of ukiyo-e art. This volume is printed in Japan and has been reproduced from an exceptionally fine, first-edition set in the Brooklyn Museum of Art to insure maximum fidelity to the original prints. The set is completed by a supplementary design and table of contents. In his introduction, Henry D. Smith II explains the world of Edo in its twilight before the Meiji Restoration and the beginnings of a modem urban society. Each plate is accompanied by a commentary that discusses its artistic and cultural interest in detail. For anyone interested in Japan, the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo is perhaps the finest guide and one of the greatest legacies Imaginable.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very Good−. Original pale-blue pictorial wraps show noticeable age-related fading, toning, and discoloration, particularly along the spine, cover edges, and extremities. Additional light rubbing, scattered surface marks, and minor edge and corner wear are present, with a darker irregular area of discoloration near the upper portion of the rear cover. Spine is toned but remains intact. Text-block edges are noticeably age-toned and discolored. Minor age-related page toning and occasional internal discoloration are present. Pages remain clean and fully legible, with no writing, highlighting, underlining, ownership inscriptions, or other markings observed. Binding is sound and the text block remains secure. No dust jacket, as issued. Book Description First edition, first printing, 1980. Edited by Henry D. Smith II and published by the Program in Asian Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with distribution by the Japan Society of New York. This copy meets the established first-printing points. The copyright page carries only the original 1980 copyright statement and does not contain a later-printing designation. Subsequent and revised printings explicitly identify themselves as such. Published before the broadcast of the original 1980 television miniseries, Learning from Shōgun was created as a scholarly companion to James Clavell's novel. The collection examines the historical realities underlying Clavell's fictional narrative while addressing the Western assumptions, romantic conventions, and cultural interpretations through which early modern Japan was presented to English-speaking audiences. The essays explore Japanese political, military, religious, and social history and compare historical figures and events with their fictional counterparts. Subjects include Hosokawa Gracia as the historical model for Mariko, samurai society and armor, Christianity in Japan, European contact, cultural interpretation, and the transformation of Japanese history into Western popular fiction. Illustrated with period-style depictions of samurai armor derived from Murai Masahiro's 1837 woodblock publication Tanki yōryaku, represented by an example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The volume also contains historical and reference material intended to help readers distinguish the documented world of early seventeenth-century Japan from its fictionalized treatment in Shōgun. An uncommon original first printing and a desirable association item for collectors of James Clavell, Shōgun, Japanese history, Asian Studies, historical fiction, television history, and Japanese-Western cultural interpretation.

Good readable/working copy.; The new wave - a term referring to the revival in Japanese woodblock printmaking during the early decades of the twentieth century - presents a comprehensive and authoritative picture of the important, but often neglected shin hanga ('new prints') of the Taisho (1912-1926) and early Showa (1926-1989) periods. The fully-illustrated publication contains three essays: an art historical overview of the developments of shin hanga (Donald Jenkins); a discussion of the pioneering role of the publisher Watanabe Shôzaburô (Henry D. Smith II and Okamoto Hiromi); and an introduction to western artists working in Japan during the formative years of the shin hanga movement (Julia Meech). The largest portion of the publication consists of over 300 annotated entries for each work (Amy Reigle Stephens). The new wave includes all the major figures of the shin hanga movement such as Hashiguchi Goyo, Ito Shinsui, Yamamura Koka and Torii Kotondo as well as over fifty lesser-known artists. In addition, in an attempt to set the stage for the development of the shin hanga movement, the publication also comprises the works by artists of the earlier Meiji period (1868-1912) such as Kobayashi Kiyochika, Kaburagi Kiyokata, Yoshu Chikanobu, Ogata Gekko and others, and by western artists working in Japan. All of the works are drawn from the impressive Robert O. Muller collection, the largest of its kind in the field of shin hanga.
